Show Business of the Week Virginia and Larry Gehre Larry Gehre: a man with vision business their family and interests Even though she had young children Virginia pursued a nursing career at Community Hospital in San Damos As happens so many places more and more houses were built and the The country became a development Gehres determined that it was time to move Utah which offered both lava rock and country living was selected as the ideal spot for their new home Eight years ago they moved from California to Fillmore For five years Anchor Aquarium Products was housed in an Indian building that Larry leased in Kanosh As the business grew the Kanosh headquarters seemed to get smaller a situation that demanded attention Larry and Virginia decided to build in Fillmore Apparently not too many local people are aware of what goes on inside the blue building that has an area of 12500 square feet Interestingly enough both Larry and the business are known all over the United States and in Canada He has in fact created a business that is one of a kind and he has established himself as THE “Rock Man” Rocks rocks rocks-tbuilding is full of all kinds and shapes of rocks from the Larry imports driftwood South Seas but the rock he mines buying from claims throughout the area The rock is taken to the building in its rough state and there Jerry and his five employees first sand blast it and then wash it in acid to create lustre Rock is then drilled shaped and sometimes decorated for aquarium use All finished products are packed in newspapers bought from scout groups and the library fund in Fillmore then boxed for shipping Larry makes personal deliveries to California and Arizona Shipments to other destinations are done through Consolidated Freight Company At this time Anchor Aquarium Products supplies eighty wholesalers all across the United States and three in Canada According to the Gehres pets and pet supplies are a big industry-- 4 billion dollars-athere are shows every couple of months Larry and Virginia go to several shows each year attended five and this year they they plan on going to seven They were in Arizona a few weeks ago and now they are preparing for Washington DC which is for invited guests only The newest offerings in pet products are displayed at the shows Booths are set up by participants such as the Gehres in which new items are shown The shows are essential for business by Dawn Carder Once upon a time there was a boy growing up on a ranch in California- -a citrus grove There he lived with his interests family and as he grew developed Going with his father who was a rock hound the boy began to pay attention to and gain knowledge of rocks Interest number Throughout the years tourists went to the ranch for hunting and the twelve boy led them around the acreage serving as their guide The hunters used bows and arrows and the boy’s desires they taught realizing him to be an archer Interest number 2 There are times when a citrus grove over can be left untended Therefore the years the family traveled to various locations where father and son collected rocks “It seems” Larry Gehre says today “that I’ve been into rocks all my life” While in high school Larry and a friend took a trip to Mexico in a Jeep pickup In Mexico they collected some decorative petrified wood and took it home with them Some years later while attending a county fair Larry saw the same wood in an aquarium An idea developed Larry bought an aquarium and eventually became friendly with the proprietors of the pet store He showed them his petrified wood and asked if they would be interested in buying it for use in aquariums The wood was an immediate success and the owners of the store requested more Larry had none He did however know of a rock called Imagination which he got and supplied the store Perhaps with little knowledge of what had happened Larry had launched a new business At the time all of this occurred Larry was working as a contractor Contracting had slowed down so he spent more time looking for and collecting rocks It seemed that everyone wanted his rocks and eventually his new business Anchor Aquarium Products became better than contracting For four or five years Larry worked at both the building trade and the rock business Gradually the latter became bigger and more time consuming completely taking over in terms of demand and importance The man who had appreciated rocks as a boy who had at Mt San Antonio studied College had a successful business of his own based on his interest! The business began eighteen years ago in California For the first ten years Larry and his wife Virginia remained in their home state expanding the but points out Larry they become very expensive He and Virginia transport their wares personally paying for gasoline meals hotels booths etc Six hundred wholesalers are expected DC to attended the Washington show They will look over the products notice the new items and then place orders After that the wholesalers will place orders monthly with businesses like Anchor Aquarium Products has Products Anchor Aquarium been advertised by word of mouth and and magazine brochures through advertisements for a number of years Three years ago Larry joined an association which allowed participation in the trade shows The exposure led and more to additional customers business Recently Larry acquired new wholesalers! To meet worked demands he production days without a single day off With all that is demanded by the business Virginia’s days are quite full She takes care of the books boxes the products decorates pieces for sale and serves as the shipping clerk Often she goes along to keep Larry company on mining trips although she does no mining herself And of course she travels with him to shows enjoying new people and places Virginia has many other responsibilities as well She and Larry are the parents of six children ranging in ages from 17 to 26 and she is a regional representative for the Utah Association of Hospital Auxiliaries locally known as the “Pink Ladies” When the children were growing up she served as PTA president and as a leader for both boy and girl scouts Recently she joined the American Legion Auxiliary she does volunteer work at the Fillmore Community Medical Center she is in a bowling club and she enjoys playing bridge Larry has little time anymore to pursue interest number he has an impressive record He is a member of the Pope and Young Club a national sportsmen’s organization and he has killed 90 big game animals all with bow and arrows Four of the re animals- -a deer 2 bears and a in the national records for size!
