Students Read Through Holidays to Find Chipmunk and Enter National RIF Contest rillmore Elementary students have been reading and filling out "acorns” for nearly two months in an effort to find their missing resident reading mascot Chip R Munk The big chipmunk has been missing since Halloween The students have formed a long “acorn trail” which winds around the school in hopes that it will lure the chipmunk out of his hiding place The trail although not yet leading to the chipmunk’s discovery has had an effect Several signs have appeared along! jhe trail signed by "Chip" Handwriting experts have determined that the signatures are indeed those of Chip R Munk Though the evidence continues to mount that the chipmunk is indeed hiding somewhere in the school his exact whereabouts remain a mystery Meanwhile students were given some more incentive to continue to read during the holidays with the anof the National nouncement RIF “In Celebration of reading contest Reading 1987” Students at Fillmore Elementary are eligible to enter because Fillmore of the PTA sponsored Elementary RIF Project Any Fillmore Elementary student may enter by obtaining an entry form from the school and meeting its minimum reading quirements between December 21 and January 3 Minimum requirements for kindergarten through second grade are For third a total of 2'A hours reading or fourth grade it is 4 hours Entry forms are to be returned to the school when class resumes in January On January 13 one winner 'and ten will be randomly chosen runners-ufrom all of the entries returned They will all receive certificates entitling them to free RIF books In addition the winner’s name will be turned into the National RIF Foundation for the national drawing in March One entry is eligible for the national drawing for each RIF project in the country The national winner selected in March will receive a free trip to DC for himself and his Washington parents a $500 savings bond and a set of free books Ten national runners-uwill receive $100 savings bonds and free books And to all those skeptics didn't think we had things totally under control when we announced to you that this year's Christmas program would be outside! Many wondered some complained some left anonymous “cranky'' phone calls but we fooled all of you didn't we? The weather we ordered even surprised us somewhat but our faith (and relief) were stronger than our surprise! Yes your chair may have been a bit frosty And the air perhaps carried a chill But we hope our songs warmed your hearts And gave you a Christmas thrill!!!
