Sept Rita and went to Nashville Tennessee last week to the 101st annual National Newspaper Convention and trade show High points of the convention besides seeing old friends and making new ones and the workshops were a tour of the Hermitage home of President Andrew Jackson official welcome by Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander speech by Alex Haley entertainment by Minnie Pearl luncheon speech by Howard Baker Operyland Theme park tour attending Grand Old Opry and a tour of the Jack Daniel Distillery Rita and had a great time but decided our favorite thing was the tour of the distillery at Lynchburg Tennessee The setting is beautiful and the whole of making whiskey was process fascinating and we had a guide who knew the operation well and had a great sense of humor took lots of mental notes and many of them remember The main success of the whiskey operation is the spring w hich has had a steady flow since they started making the whiskey and is free of iron The guide said the spring had been explored back into the mountain for a mile and the source had not been reached Corn for the whiskey is purchased from local farmers Sugar Maple is used for the charcoal the sour mash is sold for feed and the used charcoal is now made into charcoal briquettes But the most fascinating part to me was that the whiskey is aged for four years in barrels one million to the warehouse and there are 45 warehouses The barrels are only used once and then shipped overseas where they are used to age scotch Also of interest the county (Moore County) where the operation is located is a dry county A vote of 2000 is quired to allow liquor to be sold and the county only had 1700 people with about 400 of those people living in The guide said the reason Lynchburg the population stayed low was that every time a baby as born two men left town They felt in the area if they were allowed to sell at least souvenir Jack Daniel it would be a real economic boon to the area Everyone drinker or not would like to say they bought a sample at the distillery After the tour we had a catfish cookout Delicious to eat especially with a fine county band entertaining us More next week Teacher to Parent Helping your child succeed Betty Condie jSJ President byUtah Education Association with Many teenagers experiment drinking liquor and using drugs They sample alcohol and drugs for a number of reasons: They’re available Friends pressure them Some are just curious Others want to experiment as a sort of rebellion and get a thrill out of breaking rules and ignoring the law Some who feel awkward use youngsters alcohol or drugs to bolster their avoid doing anything The more honest you are with your children as they grow up and the more responsive you are to their if you don’t necessarily agree with them-tmore they feel you accept their individuality This acceptance contributes to the development of a is more resistant to tempwho person tations and peer pressure The children of parents who have lied broken promises and otherwise given them reason to distrust them may not believe anything their parents tell them including their warnings against alcohol and drugs Many experts believe addiction tendencies are inherited Others Few would deny however disagree that a child’s experiences and sense of affect susceptibility to drug and alcohol abuse Abuse is There’s hardly one parent who has not at some time been concerned about the possiblity that his or her own child may become involved in drug or alcohol abuse Drug or alcohol abuse has roots in early childhood and manifests itself later on Children who have been raised to feel important to the lives of their parents feel that their thoughts and Children who have feelings matter been given an opportunity to express themselves and participate in family decisions feel sufficiently important to If a child feels good about herself her family her future chances are she will not hurt herself by abusing drugs and alcohol ww iw ww Millard County Chronicle Progress The a Alcoholics Anonymous : USPS a a Publisher I Editor $ Dutson Susan 1 Editorial Mark Amott S at Reporter Large Advertising Sales Riley Wood Legal Billing Dawn Carder Sales Design t ' Evelyn Deb Mallet Fillmore Greathouse Office Accounts Circulation Julie Ward Rita Bullcreek Shellie Printing ALANON: For info call f I S CirculationComp Circulation Production Commercial l Manager Receivable 5 Meetings: Mon & Wed pm at Delta City Bldg J Chamber of Commerce office 5 76 N 200 Wt Delta Tuesdays: 8 pm at IPP 8 £ ? encourage public officials from responsible levels to take action and correct the problem C Max Martin Fillmore Utah Courthouse Christmas spirit to help alleviate the A couple of things are going on in the Courthouse "Blahs” of the oncoming winter and also to help get in the mood for the Christmas season Each employee will be creating (if that will be creation) 5 ornaments for the Courthouse Christemas tree also each Monday from now to Dec 15 the employees will be enjoying a day of dressing the same way they dress for weekends very casually and will pay SI 00 to a Sub for Santa Fund to do it we expect approximately $200 from the Courthouse toward the Sub fund and hope our efforts will challenge other offices of business employees to try something different for the same cause So if any of our taxpayers think we are taking our jobs too casually because of the way we are dressed we hope they realize that it is for a good cause The enclosed poem explains it all we hope Twas 3 months before Christmas and all through the Courthouse All creatures were stirring even the courtmouse The tree was still waiting for ornaments fun That each had created yes every one! The offices buzzed with plans for the season To help needy children this yiar was the reason That Pat and Linda were dressed like days off And paid a dollar to do it to he'lp with the cost of the Sub for Santa Program which needed a boost And this “dressing down day” was the fun way to do it Now Shirley Now Sharon Now Utona Now Mary On Kevin Oh John Oh Jim Oh Lauaralee To the Office of Gloria to the upstairs hall Dress down dress down dress down all With closets that urge the most exciting show so dress down to weekends LaVoys office go As closed the rear door and was turning around in the front came Susan and Connie with a bound They were dressed in their jeans from their waist to their toes and from Geneva’s desk I could see her in old clothes a bit of a boot they had snug on their feet and the face without makeup was as white as a sheet Fay spoke not to Sara but went straight to her work and sat at the computer while Marlene held court Norma and Lisa stretched out their feet Norma in warm slippers Lisa in boots oh so neat But John in his Levis and Jim in his vest took Kevin and Richard flannel shirts not the best and heard them exclaim from my desk “out of sight “dressing down for Sub for Santa will make Christmas “all right” Marlene Whicker A search for “ Middle America” by Bob Thomas For a time during the late summer and early fall of 1982 I considered myself one of the luckiest men on the face of the earth was doing exactly what I wanted to do Few men get to make that claim in their lifetimes I was writing was writing what I thought was going to be "The Great American Novel” It had a great title: Some Times the Dragon Wins It’s about a man who couldn’t cope with the so he pressures of the 20th Century killed himself It was all a piece of fiction and that caused me nothing any personal sadness to create it My agent thought it had promise and that was (he only needed to keep me at a spur typewriter 12 and 14 hours a day Six days a week never on Sunday On Sundays I tramped around the Ponderosa pines that surrounded the log cabin that I was calling home I was at 7000 feet in the Bradshaw Mountains of northcentral Arizona And I was being paid to do I also was selling a weekly that too column and an occasional feature story to the local Prescott Courier There was no large dollars attached to any of that but my needs were simple and my wants even simpler I had paper and carbon and ribbons and sharp pencils and erasers and a writer needs little else (We’ve been known to go for days on three pounds of coffee and a carton of cigarettes) August came and slipped by in a profusion of warm days and cool evenings that called for either a heavy blanket or a blaze in the Fireplace My only company was a family of squirrels a pair of bald eagles and a lone coyote who howled his presence every evening at sunset The pages of the manuscript were beginning to mount I had set a goal of 3000 words a 10 pages Maybe it was the vigorating air the heady altitude the the serentiy of a pastoral cathedral checks for freelance were days when 20 pages were rolling out of my battered Olivetti at that altitude in the September Southwest arrives with a burse of color that puts to shame even the most brilliant works of a Van Gogh or a Cezanne Sunrises make their stage entrances with all the softness of candy and then in an instant explode into probing stabs of yellows and oranges and reds They all blend well I’ve learned with the aroma of black coffee and the curl of cigarette smoke Even afternoons are brisk now An old baggy turtleneck sits well on the shoulders and back while pecking away on the cabin's open stoop More and more there is gray scud to the of the rainy season that is about to begin And almost every day a wedge of geese can be seen winging itself into the southern heavens There is "atmosphere” here to be sure And all of it fuel for the writer’s soul October should not be too difficult I was thinking I would have to take precious hours away from the typewriter to chop wood but my labors would be rewarded with warmth And the beginning of the Age of Scorpio would treat me to the glory that would be the panorama of autumn and its kaleidoscope of color But my vision of October was not to happen At least not with me in the scene On the fifth of that month a young couple arrived with a real estate agent in tow It took them 30 minutes to make up their collective mind that the cabin was what they were looking for They gave me half that many days to vacate the premises This would be a cash deal No lengthly credit check No period of escrow This was Wham Bam And Scram! It was decision time all over again But one thing was for certain: I had to go back to work The free lunch was over It wasn’t much of a decision I quickly came to the conclusion it was not my time to begin creating fiction My job was still reporting reality I celebrated the swiftness of my decisiveness by consuming a bottle of Sonoma Chablais ’74 and watching 582 pages of manuscript go up in smoke It made kid you not one helluva fire! told myself was Reality out there” “someplace along the backroads of America Others had looked for it I knew Steinbeck Guthrie Keroauc Lest Heat Moon Kuralt was still out there looking for it Why not join the parade? And so I did That is the why of why I did it I stayed on the road for 45 months passed through 47 states and traveled 82000 miles of highways byways back roads and dirt roads went looking for "Middle America”-whatever it was perceived Middle America to be I tell you right up front I didn’t find it What did find were a lot of “Middle lericans” They very backbone of this vast and often beautiful land In future articles I will attempt to tell Some have enyou about them countered small success but most bear truth to Thoreau’s claim that” ’the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation” Next: An Idle American Indian |
