The county has already felt some of the effects of the drop in the IPP workforce which began last fall Local real estate sales people report that house and land prices are dropping fast and home and apartment renters are already finding it tough to fill their units However despite these signs of “bust" there are definite signs the local economies are thriving and that the is good for further industrial potential business and agricultural development and job growth Evidence of this can be found by a quick look at the continued development of Delta's business district which is proceeding apace despite the decline in IPP activity In the past year Delta has seen the a opening of several new restaurants major department store used car lots a glass shop and a soon two to be opened new car dealership (see story this issue) to name just a smattering of the new businesses operating in West Millard County industries other than Continental IPP are also thriving Lime south of Deseret is now supplying IPP with chips used in pollution BrushWellman control equipment north of Delta has seen vigorous degrowth in the past few years as the mand increases for berylium as a metal alloy The mujhroom strengthening who plant by Fillmore has a new owner is seeking to increase sales and keep the States And Western plant open Minerals is still stripping gold out of the Drum Mountains long after the company thought its operations there would be finished All of these industries and Delta’s vigorous business growth point to the Millard County has for potential growth and 1986 may well be the year that some of the potential is proven Moving from the most to the least to occur in the likely developments the coming year during county residents can hope (1) extra construction at IPP will keep workers here until Unit 3 is built in the 1990s (2) other concerns will chose to manufacturing locate in the county and (3) that natural resources such as gold lime or berylium can be developed W hen one moves toward speculation the possibility for growth are endless seems to be for example Fillmore wait'ng in the wings for the same kind of growth that Delta has seen With its picturesque setting ample water supplies and interstate highway access it is hard to imagine a more ideal location than Fillmore for attracting industrial or business growth Meanwhile the county will continue to benefit from the IPP phenomenon Over 500 permanent employees will man the two units currently under construction Officials there have said that other small construction projects may keep workers on the job building the to protect special equipment generators in case of blackouts Beyond that looking ahead to the 1990s Los Angeles Water and Power already predicts they w ill need the power from a third IPP unit the construction of which would bring another wave of economic boom to the area just when it might need it the most With the creation of a Millard County Industrial Development Commission many outside the area are learning of Millard County If industry can be lured to locate here soon enough the county may never feel the pinch of a severe economic decline Development of natural resources are dependent on the going world price of such items as gold and fluorspar to name just a few of the many minerals in the county which could be commercially exploited A recent slate survey pointed to the Sevier Lake as a potential for potassium and magnesium As in the past agriculture continues to be the base of the county 's economy Officials report that while some area farmers remain financially strapped others are doing well Some farmers are considering the advice of agricultural experts to diversify crops While the high saline content of the area soils will not tolerate all crops it has been demonstrated that with proper drainage row crops can be grown The production of salt resistent crops such as sunflowers could also be used to diversify the agriculutral economy Finally 1986 may bless Millard County with a w hooper of a tourist traction in the form of a Great Basin National Park 100 miles west of Delta near Baker Nevada at Wheeler Peak Millard County is already very tourist dependent and a recently created county tourism committee is working to capture more of the millions in annual tourist dollars The national park is currently being considered in Congress with a House vote on the issue coming up in January or February If it passed in the House the bill would still fae a tough Senate battle before approval by the President A Springville electrical company has won the bid to install Delta's Main Street stop light The light will be installed at 200 West by Hamilton Brothers Electric at a cost to the state of S68967 Utah Department of Transportation official engineer’s estimate of the construction cost was $75094 The new signal will be installed on mast arms and will have a basic operation meaning for each direction with no phasing Work is expected to be done ths spring Thete will be some tralfic terference dining construction which under com tact allows 40 working davs to complete Meadow cares about its children’s safety The town of Meadow played Santa Claus to their families with small children this year by giving them a special gift purchased with liquor law fund money If you have never heard of it there is a liquor law fund in Utah and it is put lo good use by our state officials Money from the sales of liquor is sent once a year to each town or city in the state The amount is dependent on the sic ot the town and the towns may decide how they spend this money The little town of Meadow had saved enough of this money but to do something worthwhile with what? The town clerk Janccn Hare came up with an idea She had recently purchased a tape for her children that portrayed a group of young boys and girls that formed a club called "The Safety Kids" and in words song and illustrated book make it fun to stay away from dangerous influences She was so impressed with it and subsequent tapes that she presented the idea of buying these tapes for the children The mas or and councilmcn of Meadow thought it a good plan too so purchased about 70 tapes ot the Because growing drug problem involving voting children throughout the US they chose the tape entitled "Plav It Smart Stav Sale from Drugs " In a note ot explanation accompanying the tape they said "The council feels that by teaching our children during their carls ycais concerning the dangers ot drug abuse the problem can be lessened" These tapes were delivered to at least 70 Meadow families and among those were concerned grandparents who wanted to to their grand hildren living give them elsewhere ash household was contacted and one tape was allowed per lainily that was interested Those that may have missed this opportumlv mav call 842 '109 The Meadow Town I ouneil should be commended tor an evuaotdinary way ot commumtv spirit in saying ‘“Ac showing care" espcciallv at this nine ot year New Years Eve Dance For young adults and teens at the Palomar in Delta Dance from 9:00 pm to 12:30 am Cost is $3 per person or S5 per couple Band: High Rize Breakfast at 12:30 am |
