Show Millard ounlt ( hroimU Prourrss ss hurs Xuusl lam I9H5 29 Leamarado Days are August 31 and September 2 Leamarado Days Everyone is invited to come to Leamarado Days This year there will be a dance Saturday night August 3 in the Town Hall to the music of Centari On Monday September 2 the events will start with a program at 10:30 am the barbecue dinner at noon children’s sports at 2:00 pm and the big rodeo in the afternoon 1 married his brother Pete and two more children were born Helen 62 and Muriel There was always lots of work and each child had their responsibilities They were a very close family always helping and concerned about each othei They went on tamily outings with other families up fool (reek Canyon Hettie taught them tuny to swim m the Sevier River and some ol them were baptized in that river Ml the children loved nature and music Hettie ordered a new player piano and alter it was delivered by tram the family could find no one to help unload it when they got home Undaunted they opened the box and played it right where it sat In 1915 ucy was born beautiful but at the same tune that sickly alter was having health pioblems and getting woise every day The Johnson’s took up some land close to Lvnndvl and stalled farming at about this same time In 1916 alter was taken to Salt Lake tty lor hospital I ucy went to Oak City to peatmen! stay with Grandmother while Hettie tended alter I ucy and alter both died that year his was a diflicult time lor the tamily as Mina who was 16 and the eildest child began doing housework to cam money The boys had to haul wood with a team and wagon Irom the Cedars about eight miles away The Johnson’s couldn't afford to drill a well so water had to be hauled Irom town They milked cows and sold the milk m Iynndyl Every day they would hitch a wagon nicknamed “One Horse Shav ” drive to town with fresh milk and return with water Tunes got worse during World War with Hour and sugar shortages Hettie made bread with potatoes and (Tour and helped deliver babies often having to walk back and forth from the farm and vnndvl much of the time But they worked hard and when they sold their Leamington home they built a new house on the farm They also bought a store in Oak City and the older girls took care of it and lived with their Grandmother Roper About this time Lynndvl was a community seeing a lot of action There was Murray’s Drug Store Mead’s Store Passwater’s Toggery and Confectionery Scannel’s Store Wells Nielson had a butchershop and a Mrs Tarm sworth had a bakery which later burnhere was a rooming house ed down a “Beanery” a newstand and a dance hall not mention a saloon which tracted cutthroats and gamblers according to the Johnson girls LI lie remembers a night when a man was shot in the saloon She and I ester were just children but succumbed to curiosity and tried to get close for a look They succeeded in getting a first hand look at the dead man with a bullet through his chest The terrified kids spent the night in then mother’s bed In those days dancing was one of the really enjoyable things m lite and the Johnson family loved it dance halls m There were lynndvl eamington and Oak ( itv llie said that a special attrac ( anvon tion up the Canyon was a Ian daitcet so skill!
