BYABRIE LUNT Staff Writer For those who enjoy watching men competing for a crown pageant-stylthe Mr. Dixie pageant is for you. This Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Gardner Ballroom, the competition will reach a new level beyond the beautiful girls in sparkly e, dresses wanting world peace. Fourteen male students from DSC will be judged for the chance to be crowned Mr. Dixie. Student Government is planning a Welcome to the Jungle theme paired with the song by Guns N Roses. The Gardner Ballroom will be covered with the jungle atmosphere of fake palm trees, vines and green and brown everywhere. Kassi Gillette, a junior communication major from Las Vegas and committee member for the pageant, said this years pageant will be unforgettable. This pageant is a spoof of all of the stereotypical Miss America style pageants, she said. The boys are supposed to be funny and goofy about it. Its about show Contestant Ezra Hainsworth, a freshman communication major from Mt. Pleasant, agreed that the pageant is all about making a fool of himself and embarrassing himself. I think its a great idea because regular pageants seem to be stereotyped as uptight and serious, he said. I just think its a funny idea because it lightens the mood, and its a great show. The contestants will be showing off their Red Storm spirit and humor while being judged based on an question, talent, swimwear and evening wear. Warning: this swimwear may not necessarily be bathing beauties. The boys will have to strut their stuff in their swim suit, which can be anything form board shorts to a rubber ducky floaty, Gillette said. As far as talents go, the boys are being hush hush, and the committee wont give any clues either. It could be anything from yodeling to interpretive dancing well just have to find on-sta- Dixie. But there will also be first runner up,' second runner up, directors choice and King of the Jungle. They are all really good guys, Hainsworth said. I think its any- ordinated yet dancing around. Gillette said its supposed to be hilarious. Wyatt Hopkins did a really good job choreographing, Hainsworth said. Its fun, funny and the music is sweet. Hainsworth will be competing with the other Mr. Dixie hopefuls for the main prize of Mr. out. One of the unique things the Mr. Dixie pageant has to offer will be an opening dance number choreographed by one of the contestants himself. Jon Oglesby, Thomas Poole, Austin Warner, Heading to St. George is Taylor Albaugh and the band Rufio, here for one night only. Rufio will be performing at GoGo37 Gallery on Feb. 24, along with Last Call and Robots Guide to Living. The show will start at 8 p.m. Taylor Albaugh, the newest member of Rufio, has never played in St. George. He is excited to give St. George citizens a great show. Albaugh is the bass player, and he is excited to be a member of the band he was a fan of while he was in high school. In high school I was in a lot of crappy bands, Albaugh said. I was actually a fan of Rufio before I was in the band. awesome. Rufio is a well known band, not just in the United States, but also throughout the world. Albaugh said they have performed in Indonesia, Australia, South America, and, of course, North America. The biggest crowd was in Belgium, Albaugh said. Albaugh said: Rufio broke up in 2006, and I became friends with Scott (who plays guitar and sings) a few years later. Then, they asked me to join when they needed a new bass player. Ryan Groskreutz, one of the owners of the GoGo37 Gallery, said Rufios coming to St. George is great for the music locally. Groskreutz said: I think that its one more step in legitimizing a music scene here. Groskreutz said he saw Rufio in concert before the break-u- p in 2003, and he is excited Rufio contacted GoGo37 Gallery to set up a concert. The redhead is just as comfortable standing on his drum throne in full drag as he is in cutoff overalls, playing a washboard like a guitar. The man is a fireball, and its not just the color of his hair. Durfee (as hes affectionately known by his friends and bandmates) has drummed in g jug bands, dazzling jazz fusion cover-manglin- three-piece- s, corn-fe- d country metal groups, and a mash of other projects during the 25 years since he first picked up a set of sticks. He still las his very first drum cit sitting in his base- C scene in southern Utah and Las Vegas, they know who Dave Durfee is and have very likely played with him. Dave and I share the same philosophy, Brian Huntsman said on his way to a rehearsal with Aura Surreal, one of the three bands he plays in with Durfee. Hes a guy who thinks about the whole package artistically what it sounds like, what it looks like. He wants to make it bigger and better. Aura Surreal is Durfees serious project, and if you see the band perform, you will understand why. They describe their sound as dynamic modern metal and theyve managed to strike a balance between harshly aggressive and shockingly crisp melodic passages.
