Baird, who began working on her platform before the pageant began, said it is something she believes can make a big difference in our community. Miss Dixie 2010 Alana s I v J s J Lee, a junior communication major from Las Vegas, said all of the Miss Dixie 2011 contestants are passionate about their platforms. This is an exciting time for them, Lee said. They are excited, and they know now that they can make a difference and affect a change in their community. The Miss Dixie pageant is scored by the Miss America Organization guidelines and the winner is chosen based on a composite score in three general categories: physical beauty, talent and interview. The majority of the interview is conducted behind closed doors before the pageant ever happens, and the questions asked are by no means simple to answer. They require knowledge about issues from a local to a global level. Rose said Miss Dixie contestants are required to know more about topics like health care and foreign wars than the average person would be expected to know.
