Show 14- ARTS - DIXIE SUN & ENTERTAINMENT WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21,20" Keep cars running like new with regular upkeep theres very little a a car in Tui regudo by them- BY CHARLA JANES Dixie Sun Staff Writer Keeping- VEDNESC tip-to- p shape can be somewhat of a challenge with gas prices on a steady incline and the meager budgets of college students. Cars today are expensive to keep in a good condition. The average college student will spend almost $70 a month on gas alone. Where does that leave a poor student if his or her car suddenly breaks down? The trick is to not let it get hat far by keeping a vehicle maintained on a daily basis. Maintenance includes much more than just the tire regular oil change and rotation, which most students dont know. More than half the students at Dixie State College don't know the odds and ends under the hoods of their cars, which isnt good in any case. John Hafen of Zion Motors also said there is little that one ordinary person can do nowadays as far as popping the hood goes. Everything is computerized now, said Hafen, lar person can selves." Eoxanna Boggess, a freshman business major from Hurricane, recently had her car break down. Luckily for me, I lived right near campus,"I Boggess said. But didnt really know what was wrong with my car. Hafen said an important key to keeping a car in good condition is doing all of the monotonous check- , up procedures. "When you're doing a routine oil change, Hafen said, that's when you notice the little things that can also be wrong with the BY D' Die 2C urge's iphith j ther itch ,i iseph ruruni Tui'scli . what can one ordinary person who isnt exactdo to ly automotive-sawmaintain a constant upkeep? Hafen said the So, y Every Thursday night at the Elks Lodge of St. George, Gayle Louise, the local Karaoke Indy," sets up her equipment, busily getting ready for what promises to be a full house that night. Shannon Fillmore, the cub manager for the lodge, said Louise does a fantastic job. We usually get a peak crowd of young people in here at around 11:30, she said. Its just a fun night for the age group. Everyone enjoys themselves." The Elks Lodge has been doing karaoke night for eight years with Louise, who has personally been doing karaoke for 13 years. At the lodge, Louise plugs in all of her equipment to the TV, which helps the audience sing along, at the front of the stage. There are books on a table next to her computer screen with more than 11,000 songs to choose. Songs in these books range from country to opera, but if that isnt enough, Louise takes n requests of different things, and guest singers can also bring their own CDs. People can sing anything, Louise said, just as long as it follows my song policy of no reference to drugs, no vulgar language, and no disrespect to women or men. One of the many karaoke regulars in the area is Diane Hammeren She was introduced to the karaoke scene a year before she moved to St. George and has been attending karaoke nights for almost six years now with her husband. I love to sing," she said Music is my life. Its understandable to think that a lot of people never get up because theyre scared, but everyone applauses afterward, so its OK." Both Hammeren and Louise are said to be part of the karaoke family. "We have a lot of regulars, Louise said, and we're all just like one big family. We give hugs when we meet and when we leave. Look at the manual in your car, Hafen said It should tell you when to get the spark plugs changed and when to get the radiator flushed and so forth." There are certain ways to lessen the sting of gas inflation. It used to be that gas would sit in tanks for a while so the impurities could settle to the bottom of the barrel, Hafen said, but now there's no time, so gas is very impure. This makes it so that fuel filters get clogged easier," he said. We have 10 times as many fuel filter changes now than before." Karaoke offers pleasing alternative to repetitive events during week BY CHARLA JANES Dixie Sun Staff Writer hnicc ' - Motors takes about half an hour and costs $24.95. We check everything when we do the oil change as well: the tires, transmission, coolant and everything, he said. If we see a problem, we let the person know and see if they want to schedule an appointment to es liaur able in a bar. Louise said single women need not feel intimidated or afraid in this situation because she looks out for such attendees. Louise also said she knows some people feel uncomfortable around other people who are drinking. The last thing anyone here wants to do is promote college students to go to a bar and drink, Louise said. But so many people come here and just order soda or water and have just as much fun. Hammeren said people dont have to drink to have fun. Karaoke isnt meant to be serious," she said. People who take it seriously are missing out on all the fun. Of course, not all the karaoke nights in St. George are in bars. Louise does karaoke at the Firehouse Grill at the Sunset West Bowling and Fun Center from 8:45 to close on Tuesday and Friday nights. On Wednesday nights shes at The One and Only at 8:45p m Thursday nights are at the Elks Lodge starting at 8:15 p.m. Saturday nights belong to the Eagles Lodge in Hurricane at 8:30 p.m. and Hafen also said that one can check the air in his or her tires often to prevent poor gas mileage. Even if one feels he or she is safe, there is always the case of danger. A student or the move should carry a flashlight, jumper cables, reflectors and his or her cell phone.
