Show WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER OPINION 21,2005 DIXIE SUN - Procrastination cures indecisiveness BY PHIL WALKER Dixie Sun Staff Writer Well I m afraid that it s that time again It s Friday night and once again I am late with my column How come I have such a hard time coming up with a good idea once a week9 I dont mean just me in kids particular, but college in general I mean, we re all reasonably intelligent .kids who have been through what, 12 years of school at least9 So why the problem9 ve come to realize that it is because people in general cannot make decisions, or at least good ones, very quickly Now there are excep tions to the rule, such as Colin Mochrie or Rvan Stiles on Who s Line Is It Anyway9 However, since I don t have a Colin or Ryan in my closet to make fast paced decisions for me, we ignore them 1 11 This problem of mdeci-sivenes- s is a problem that has been pestering me for many years, but I ve finally stumbled onto a surefire process that has helped me through many hard decisions Step one of this process is simple think long and hard about the decision Weigh your options Look at both sides Be reasonable Amy other advice that you ve heard 10,000 times that you want to throw in, feel free After this, promptly forget everything that you thought about, including that one fabulous idea for your newspaper column because you were too busy playing Back in Black on your guitar to w'rite it down Idiot The next step is to relax Take a few days off from thinking about this decision Trying to decide when to pay your electric bill9 Don t w'orry about it, they don t shut it off right away anyway Worried about whether you should move your car from the red curb9 Forget about it, they don t R.EALLY need to get to that fire hydrant Be careful, though The w'aiting time for each decision is different If, for example, you happen to be doing an essay for an English class, you general ly will have a few' weeks Or you may only have a few hours before The O C " is on to decide what to eat In any case you should wait the maximum amount of time possible so you only have to stress one day instead of the entire time, unless it endangers your O C watching potential Give yourself plenty of time for that Next, preferably at the 11 last moment if possible, frantically ask every person who comes into a radius w'hat he or she thinks you should do I find this is most effective at grocery stores and shopping malls Use discretion, though Ask the wrong person and he or she might come at you wnth the response, Leave me alone, you crazy nut or my personal favorite, censored off, you dumb censored censored " Don t worry about taking careful note of what anyone says to you even if it s a good idea or a friend's opinion This is really more about getting your creative juices flowing than about listening or paying attention Next, you want to wait a little bit more Use what er excuse you want, just wait However, prepare your self for an actual decisic to be made in the kindoi near future Finally, ATHLETIC o u j 11 CLUB Fridays in September are FREE for Dixie College Students!
