Show 6 -- CAMPUS BEAT DIXIE SUN Dixie Forum: War and poetry There are many famous war poems. In fact, there isnt a century that hasnt helped to shape a collection of war poetry. There has never been a century that has been lived in peace. A century free of war has yet to be realized. WAR! What is it good for? by Ashlee Jensen Dixie Sun Stuff Writer When a persons thoughts turn to poetry, it is usually through forms of love, roses, sunshine, and triumph. But what happens when a poem relays a message that is negative and violent? What happens when a poem relays the truth and horrors of war? There are countless soldiers that have written about their experiences of hope and fear, honor and humiliation, and other approaches on the experience of war. Ertel presented the question: What are these soldiers trying to tell us about war? Susan Ertel has a masters in arts and English. She has been working for DSC for five years as an assistant professor in composition. Men affected by war, let alone inspired to write about it. She is of daughter to a military veteran, a niece to a military veteran, a sister to a military veteran, and an aunt to a military veteran She focused her Dixie forum presentation on war poetry. Ertel read a war poem written by Emily Dickinson titled, Is Success Counted Sweetest. Women watch their men suffer from their war experiences as well as their sons die in war. The obvious guest lecturer Susan Ertel speaks to DCS students about violence, war, and poetry. FULLMER Women fight one of the darkest sides to war, and that is waiting, grieving, and comforting their men who suffer. All people have suffered the Dixie Forum WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, damage that war has on the human race is physical, but perhaps a more prominent affliction is the mental strain and damage to the soul. There is no winning in war. There are only varying degrees of losing. Another issue that Ertel brought up about war is the illusions that the big screen relays to people. Violence and w'ar are more graphic and appealing today in video games and television then ever. They present an illusion that dying for your country is appropriate and agreeable. War these days, is merely a form of entertainment. The reality of war is lost. Ertel reminded her audience that the veterans who write these war poems are writing the truth about war. Concluding her speech, Ertel read an anonymous quote: When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then and only then shall we have peace. According to Rob Tersigni, public relations director of the Washington County Sheriffs Department, search and rescue crews arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m. but were also unsuccessful in recovering Fullmers hand. According to Dr. David Barnett, emergency room physician at DRMC, recovery of the hand would have sent Fullmer to Salt Lake City to have it reattached. Reattaching a hand is a highly specialized procedure, said Barnett. Utah only has one hospital that performs those types of procedures, and thats the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake. Kades parents, who live in South Jordan, had a hard time knowing whether to stay near Salt Lake or drive to St. George. Kades parents had a tough decision, living so close to Salt Lake, said Croshaw. They werent sure if search and rescue would find the hand and send Kade up north to have it reattached. After a couple hours of waiting they just decided theyd better come down. Although the efforts of the search and rescue crews were unsuccessful in recovering the hand, Tersigni does not believe darkness hindered the search in any way. In over 90 feet of water, its going to be dark, even during the daytime. The divers always use underwater lights in situations like said. this, Tersigni "I want to see the Rebels go big and win this whole thing, Even with all the stuff that has happened with our team, it shouldn't hold us back."
