Show 10 THE WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28. 2001 SUN Sports Talented Cheerleaders not only inspire cheers on the court, but also work hard off it. By Carly Cash Feature Editor jcash37email msn com The cheerleaders of Dixie State College are best known for their extreme DSC spirit, displayed at sports events, along with their skillful halftime routines This years DSC cheer squad has much more than a peppy attitude It has played an active role in communicty affairs The cheer squad is divided into two groups working conjointly to get the crowd enthused The song leaders specialize m dance, while the specified cheerleaders emphasize stunting Nine boys also make up the cheer squad, aiding tremendously with intricate stunts and creating a lot of volume This years squad has become heavily involved not only within DSC related active ties, but within the St George community The cheer squad participated in many of the events related to D week They also showed tremendous Dixie spirit by participating in the Homecoming and Rotary Bowl parades The cheerleaders have also shown support to the community by participating in the grand opening of several local businesses, along with acting as positive role models by participating in drug free week at local elementary schools Although committing to time m activities, the cheer squad maintains a high academic standard All members of the cheer squad must maintain a 2 5 GPA The cheerleaders practice early in the morning in the old gym, three times a week, Right, the Dixie State College cheerleaders perform during a timeout during the mens basketball game against Utah Valley State College on Saturday Pictured from left, are Crystal Peek and Spencer Mosely; Tiffany Curtis and Bryce Jones, Elsha Esplin and Brent Hawkes; Korryn Glover and Dustin Gaither Below, The cheerleaders pose outside Fabulous Freddy's Carwash during a service project earlier this month. The cheer squad has been extremely successful this year at getting the crowd pumped up, by throwing prizes to the audience and having contests to see who can be the loudest This year has been extremely successful for the DSC cheerleaders, with such highlights as their cheer camp m San Diego, Calif, during the summer and the edge of your seat athletic games, where the crowd has become enthusiastically involved Tryouts for next years cheer squad will be held Apnl A few changes concerning the squad will be made, including elimination of the song leader aspect All cheerleaders will need to be able to stunt, tumble, dance, and cheer, creating one unified group. The new cheer squad also hopes to compete m cheer competitions, something the current squad has not participated m The DSC cheerleaders bnng much needed spint and enthusiasm to Dixie State College, creating a campus filled with a lot of Dixie pnde 27-2- 8 |
