Dixie ends Riversides unbeaten streak By Arnie Graff SpOrtS Editor com The unbeaten and nationally 5th-rank- Riverside College came into St. George hoping to do some damage. Unfortunately for the Tigers from far beyond the canyons on Southern Utah, the Dixie State College Rebels baseball team had the whooping sticks out were ready to use them and OH BOY, did they ever. The Big Boys in Red scored 31 runs on 37 hits over the weekend defeating Riverside Saturday 4 Saturday and destroying Colorado Northwestern Fnday, 13-Our hitters just woke up and did a great job, Dixie coach Mike Littlewood said. 1 Also, the Rebels lost to Riverside on Fnday, but who really cares about that uninteresting game? Most people were probably too busy re lacing all of their shoes to show up. Anyway, the first triumph over CNC was - 7-- 15-1- -- Speech, from page 6 But what was once a trend is now the norm, and it's really starting to wear on me. At the beginning of the devocabulanza-tio- n of America, it was easy to avoid the hair flippers. And if the myth about this type of speech belonging only to women was true, then I suppose I could avoid my gender males as well as entirely; but it's everyone females - and there is no escaping it. The worst part is that I do it, too. Call me a hypocnte if you like, but I consider myself a helpless victim of this newfangled atrocity passing itself off as a language. I don't want to speak this way (and in all fairness to myself, I do it as rarely as possible), but how can I avoid picking up the speech patterns of virtually all of my peers? I don't consider myself the only victim, either. n Perhaps we are all victims of the of our society (most recently exemplified by the inauguration of an illiterate president) , but no one seems to care. No one seems especially interested in making remotely intelligible conversation, -- dumb-ing-dow- a sheer dandy with Cedar City standout James Platt and reliever Matt Sheppard constantly befuddling batters. Supplying the heavy lumber for the Rebels, as usual, were sluggers Jake Jordinson and Brock Jacobsen. Each had monster homeruns while Jordinson was 4 with three RBIs and Jacobsen was 5 with 3 RBIs to their foes dismay. Now lets get a little deve.. In the second game where David (the Rebels) smote Goliath (Riverside) , the Tigers received their first loss at 15-- 1 and the Rebels ran their record to an amazing 12-During this offensive assault, the Rebels got round tnp jogs by crushers Dan Polhamus and Wick Udy and serious offensive production from Taylor Pullins and Andy Swanson who each had several big hits to prove that they have something that isnt available at Radio Shack or Walmart. This means a lot to come out after last night and prove how tough we are, Udy said. 3-- 3-- and if our verbally challenged generation can't attnbute its problems merely to insecurity and can't just pin them on women, like, what's the deal? Perhaps it's a combination of laziness, lack of confidence and even the word "like" replacing "um" as a verbal pause, but personally, I think it's just an indication of rampant stupidity and apathy. Communication is important, dang it! If you come off sounding like an idiot, who's going to take you senously? In the words of Alicia Silverstone in the movie Clueless, "So, okay, I be a traitor to my generation don't want to and all, but I don't get it !" And it's not just the addition of these moronic words that's causing problems. It's also the lack of specificity in speech. The word "thing" may be an essential need part of the English vocabulary, but it not replace every single noun. I am so sick of trying to decipher sentences such as, "I need the, like, stuff cause I know?" gotta go to the thing tonight, ya Could you just, like, totally shut up?! What-EVE- Shoving different food items into the mouth at such rapid speeds does cause one to become quite thirsty. The food fest nicely accommodated for the dry mouths of its visitors by providing four separate soda booths to wash everything down. After the hearty food was consumed, customers were delighted to see strategically placed selections of desserts such as ice cream, cookies, cake, and donuts . The entire event was like stumbling into a some sort of heavenly sanctuary where one PBL, from page 7 friendly. Kudos to Harmons for providing another successful food fest for local residents . as effectively. The Jubilee Home, which services the needs of families staying from Washington, Clark, Beaver, Iron, and Kane Counties, needs the supports of groups like PBL to stay operational. All work at the Jubilee Home is done by volunteers; therefore, without the assistance of community volunteers, the Jubilee Homes valuable services could not be administered t-- f could find just about anything heshe had a craving for. The food wasnt the only thing that the food fest offered its visitors. Hourly drawings for vanous prizes kept people there for hours at a time hoping for the chance of winning a prize. This year was especially plentiful and drew the usual large crowd wanting to get m a free lunch or dinner. The lines were quick, the food was excellent, and the service was f. P m v j mi The Jubilee Home workers said that they were appreciative of the work rendered by PBL. The Jubilee Home is also seeking the help of other volunteers through work or donations (the home is completely run off of donations, and currently, individuals are being invited to buy bncks for an expansion at a cost of $100). ?! .
