What reason would there be for further education with all that scam jig Page 5 The Dixie Sun There are supposedly many ways to tell your future, from astrological forecasts to Tarot cards. With all of these sources at hand, then why is it that we go in day after day never knowing exactly what rill happen to us? For all we know, the world could end next week, therefore, making our time at college thus far a complete waste of time. Or, your dad might Annette Seegmiller The future is glorified by the media as being metallic and shiny, where we live in a advanced, technologically computer-base- d society. The need to go to school will be completely eliminated because a computer chip can be implanted in your brain with all the information youd ever need, from solving imperical formulas to figuring out the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow. The water will be clear and pure, the synthetic atmosphere will protect us from UV rays, and youll be able to buy a ticket to fly to the moon and stay for a week. Aliens will come forward and form an alliance with humans, and a colony suitable for man to inhabit will be built on Mars. A cure for AIDS will be discovered, and everyone can send their clones to work while they take off on a vacation. All this is possible only if we plan for these things now. These early settlers, called by Brigham Young to the Cotton Mission, camped on the present day Dixie College campus during the first bleak weeks of their winter arrival to southern Utah. Nearly 800 people in number, the pioneers established a city which is now nearly 50,000 strong. The Dixie College Student Council is calling the community to join them in paying respect to the pioneers of Utahs Dixie and get a little exercise in the process. It would be a more fitting tribute if we had all the runners pulling hand carts and wearing heavy leather boots, said Ryan But, Secrist, ASDC president. its still a great reminder of the sacrifice that went into establishing this institution and the important role education has played in this community. In addition to student efforts, Dixie College administration has undertaken a large fund raising campaign to complete the memorial. The college has asked each descendant of original pioneers to make a donation in behalf of their families.
