Show The Dixie Sun Page 2 April Campus Info Health fair Continued 8, 1997 News Editor: Missy Evans (mm Page One Outdoor Outlet, a store specializing in outdoor gear, and a Bobby Lawrence Karate Schools representative were present and buzzing to give out information, as well as plenty more pamphlets. Mary Kay cosmetics got in on the action, too, with representative Lara Stewart shamelessly handing out free samples and information about the line. Commenting abort the fair, she said, "I've enjoyed this it looks like something that Ls good; for anybody." Dixie Regional Medical Center had a booth set up, as well, with a sign saying "Do you know your BMI?" Dixie Regional representative Mary Kaye Kuhlmann said, "I come every year. I see students who are pretty interested in health. Other years, though, I have seen more sun! I was let down that the fair was inside, but it's fun anyway." Flenty of students learned their body mass indexes, and DROP-I- N plenty more got free back rubs next door at the booth of Desert Springs Massage. Even a travel agency had a chip in the festivities. Travel Max representative Kathy Schmurker commented, "A lot of students here are from other states, so they need some good deals to travel!" Herbs for Health seemed to be a popular booth, as well as Cardiax Personal Health. The most sobering, however, were the booths set up by Nicotine Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. Teresa of Alcoholics Anonymous, (AA) said, "We're hoping we can plant a seed. That if students do have a problem, they'll have somewhere to go.""Alcoholics Anonymous is a spiritual approach to overcoming your addictions.. ..we believe in rigorous honesty. Alcohol is cunning, baffling, and powerful." Said Teresa, "Alcohol is killing a lot of people, whether TUTORING through cirrhosis of the liver, or hitting somebody, or just falling down. There is where you drink so much that you can't speak coherently anymore, and you have to be institutionalized. I see eleven and fourteen year old alcoholics, and they come to AA because they don't want to live that way forever." "We're hoping to let students know that there is a place to go, before they hit bottom." Teresa stressed that AA is available to anybody at any time, and that the hotline, is always there. Besides pamphlets, pamphlets, and more pamphlets, the Drug and Alcohol Center gave away free popcorn, soda, and hotdogs. Said program director Cheryl Rose, "Hotdogs aren't the most healthy choice, but we wanted to give something to the students to have while they look at all the booths ." wet-brai- n, 673-393- 6, News Briefs Last week a student was caught forging a signature on a financial aid paper.
