UB provides the students with weekly workshops that offer help in decision making, career planning, academic advisement, ACT preparation, study skills and a wide variety of year-lon- g activities related to firsthand learning. The students also spend six weeks at Dixie College each summer "experiencing campus life." They live m residence halls, eat cafeteria food, attend college prep and college level classes and participate in field trips," Morrell said. "It gives them a feel of what college life is all about." Does the program pay dividends? Morrell thinks so. Whether the student chooses Dixie College or another postsecondary institution, he says a large majority of students continue to higher education. Morrell has directed Upward Bound since 1988, (UB) Educational Talent Search (ETS) since 1991, and Student Support Services (SSS) since 1994. All three programs are sponsored by the U.S. Department of is Education and funding secured by submitting periodic grants. Aimed at preparing disadvantaged high school students for higher education, UB has been at Dixie College since 1983.
