Show Page 6 DIXIE SUN May 24, 1991 Teacher Of The Year Receives Award Alicia Monsour Staff Writer teacher Business Becky Smith was recently honored as Dixie College Teacher of the Year. She says the one thing she dislikes about teaching is the lack of time she has to plan what she wants. "There is never enough time in the classroom to plan and do everything I want to do", said Smith. Becky Smith has heen a business instructor at Dixie College for 10 years and a secondary teacher for 12. Apart from receiving the Outstanding teacher award. Smith recently received her M E D. , Masters of Secondary Education from Utah State University. Over her 10 years at Dixie Smith has taught Word Processing, Human Relations, several levels of typewriting and short hand. "I was so surprised" , said Smith of receiving the prestigious award. "I don't think I was set apart from anyone really. I think I am just doing what any good teacher should be doing." Before coming to Dixie College, Smith taught at Bryce Valiev High School for two r O ki lJ Dixie College Teacher of the Year years which according to Smith, was an experience to rerri ember. "The school was very small. At one time I was the 2 grade business teacher, 7-- 8 grade math teacher, girls P.E. instructor, girls coach for volleyball, basketball, and track. Cheerleading and Drill team advisor and Senior class advisor all at once." said Smith "It kept me busy but I loved it." Smith says that the always evolving business field is what keeps her from getting burned out like a lot of teachers do. "I never have time to get. bored with mv ioh because I am always having to keep up with the latest things to pass " on to my students. Being a teacher wasn't the first carrer choice of Smith. The teaching career came as kind of a surprise to me. I never really planed on being a teacher. I just knew I wanted to be in the business field somphow and I like to work with people", said Smith. 'The biggest reason I keep with teaching is for the wonderful feeling I get inside when I feel like I have really reached a student or they come in and thank me. To think that I have touched a persons life enough for them to come in and tell me so is such a high. It alone is enough to make me come to work everyday. I wouldn't trade that feeling for the world.
