If the blow would have been directly in the face, he would have Free Medical Care For Dixie Students Collette Williams Staff Writer Dixie College students can receive free medical care from the Dixie Medical Center Emergency room. However, the medical exam is only free for minor medical problems, such as a sore throat and a runny nose, according to Trudy Boyack, Emergency Room Manager. "If a student comes into the emergency room with an injury like a broken leg or a severe cut, then the program will not cover the exam, and the student will be responsible for the cost of the exam," said Boyack. Both Dean of Students Bill Fowler and Boyack have have been very pleased with the success of the program. "When the program first began last fall, there were a few problems that had to be worked out, but for the most pnrt, we have been able to take care of them," said Fowler. Many students were unaware that the college offered this program. "They are required to take at least 12 credit hours and maintain a 1.75 GPA as freshman and a 2.0 in their sophomore year to show some academic progress, said Allred. If these athletes drop below these standards their scholarships are then revoked. When this happens the athlete has two choices: get a grade or lose their scholarship, said Allred. Athletes trying to get grade changes or special considerations in order to change maintain their scholarships provoked an April 11 memo from Allred to all faculty advising them that they were not to show any favoritism towards these athletes. "We issued that memo as a precaution against that sort of situation," said Allred. "There has not been, to my knowledge, any such incidents." There have been some cases when athletes have lost their actually scholarships. "Probably, on the average, six to twelve athletes lose their eligibility every year and that results in about $6,000 to $8,000 dollars in lost scholarship money," said Allred. FENMe ntnmifflDwniM!
