There are about 25 Reserve members and 10 National Guard members attending Dixie College that can still be called up for active duty ,said Garret. If a Guard or Reserve member is called up and is unable to finish the quarter they will either receive their grades or have their money refunded depending on the time of the quarter in which they leave, said Max Rose, Dixie College Academic Vice President. "If they leave in the eighth week or beyond, they will receive their grades as such, he said. "Anything beyond the first week and before the eighth week will be At on a case by case Dixie College students are expressing concern over the possibility of a draft. "I'm concerned because my plans for the future could he put on the backburner," said Derek Segle, a sophomore from South Carolina. In a statement issued Jan. 22, Samuel K. Lessey Jr., National Director of the Selective Service System said a reinstatement of the draft is not being considered at this time. "There is no indication a draft is needed," said Lessey. that Neither Congress, the White House, or the Department of Defense indicates a draft is under and the consideration, President has said that a draft is not necessary, said a statement issued by the Selective Service System. In the event that the draft is needed, it would take an act of Congress to reinstate the draft, said Barbi Richardson, Public Affairs Specialist of the Selective Service System in Washington DC. ' Selective that time the Service would conduct a lottery drawing in order to determine the order in which men would be called. The first priority group would consist of men ir the calendar year of their 20th birthday. If the draft began this year, men born in 1971 would be the first drafted, said Richardson. The lottery would then take men in the calendar year of their 21st birthday, and so on, until their 26th birthday. Once men reach 26 years of age, they generally are over the age of liability for the draft, said Richardson. All men registered by Selective considered Service are "available for service" unless they are given a different status by the Selective Service. If a registrant believes that he cannot or should not report for duty as directed, he may request a postponement, deferment, or exemption by filing a claim and sending it to the Selective Service. Receipt of such a claim delays the been processed registrant's induction until his claim has investigated. and College students are no longer deferred from Students of the Quarter service. College deferments were abolished in 1971 and under the new bill students can finish the quarter or semester they are in, or if they are a senior they may finish out the year. Valid deferments include ministers, certain elected public officials and a few other categories. Hardship deferments are available for men whose induction would result in hardship to persons who Student of the Quarter Each quarter the faculty nominates students for an award called the Outstanding Student of the Quarter. Each faculty member submits a name of a student who has excelled in their class to their division Dean. The Dean then makes the finial decision and the students are recognized at special luncheon each quarter sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
