Show Letter From the Editor Kim SUN End of year brings tears and relief Peterson Editor-in-Chi- finishing the last the year, and the of paper last paper I will produce at Dixie College, I feel a great deal of stress relief. Yet at the same time, it is hard for me to let go of what was the highlight of my two years at Dixie and some of the most building, the staff and administrators became some of my best and closest friends. I also acquired a second mother, Sheila Bastian, who always made sure I was wearing a coat and that I was never sick. I am thankful for her and for all the ad- rewarding experiences in my life so far. ministrators, faculty and staff that I have worked am indeed lucky to have to be the beginning of my higher education. It has given me more chances for learning and leadership positions that I probably never would have received at any other institution. When I came to Dixie as a scared little freshman, I started working on the Dispatch, a faculty newsletter that was produced once a week. I worked directly with the faculty and was able find out instantly that Dixie boasts some of the finest with. While I chosen Dixie College faculty, staff and ad- ministration. While working in the May 20. 1988 DIXIE SUN Page 5 Administration Although the newspaper staff has been extremely small, they have all done a great job with all the assignments I have overloaded on them. Mistakes have been made this year, yet we (the staff) learned from every error and have tried to correct them in following issues. But for a staff that never had lessons on producing newspapers, they sure pulled through as being the in the best rookies business! I feel we have all learned a great deal this year with experiences that we can use remember and throughout the rest of our lives. Many thanks and No sympathy to Cambodian refugees com- pliments goes to those faithful readers who care about what happens outside their own homes and have taken the initiative to write letters to the editor or send articles for us to print. We (the staff) have tried our best to provide our readers with the most important and interesting articles of the school year and we hope we have accomplished that very goal. Congratulations and good luck to the graduating sophomores. For those students who are continuing at Dixie, I encourage you to become involved in the newspaper next year as well as all other activities, events and learning opportunities. Dixie offers so many opportunities that other colleges and universities cant even begin to match. Take advantage of these opportunities while you can and most of all. Catch the Dixie Spirit!! By Dan Maxwell Am I a racist? Am I a cynic? Am I a zealous patriot? Why did I feel so little sympathy for the Southwest Asian refugees who were the subject of a recent Honors Forum lecture by Joan Criddle? Why was I so indifferent to the descriptions of human suffering under the tyrannical regimes which followed the American troop withdrawal from that region? Why am I so nonchalant about this terrible example of absolute power corrupting absolutely? Could it be that Ive lost compassion for my fellow man? Can I have become so pessimistic about the human condition that I blame the victims for their own misfortune? Maybe the answer is maybe. There can be no question that the years following the U.S. troop withdrawal from Southwest Asia were chaotic and horribly terrifying for the people of that region. Many people suffered greatly at the hands and guns of their ruthless governments. Many lives were lost, and the indifference of the rest of the world probably cost many more. were the what But alternatives? Frequent attempts by world powers to bring peace and stability to the area have failed time and time again. And the Communist forces throughout the region have proved to be intransigent about their claims to power. And those with the most to gain or lose, the native population, have been notoriously indifferent to their plight; neither questioning nor challenging their taskmaster. That indifference has probably contributed to the slaughter about as much as any other cause. And, of course, these past few decades have not been the first time the Southwest Asian people have been victimized by their leaders. Generations of their ancestors have failed to bring any semblance of civilisation to the countries. And it has become apparent that the future will hold more of the same for that region. Yes, I am a cynic. No, Im not a racist. And my patriotism rarely extends beyond the borders of my country. But I find it hard to teel pity for a people who are so easily manipulated by their leaders, and who rely on the whims and plots of others to set their direction, as the Southwest Asians have done. All I can do is hope for change.
