Show Li March 13, 1987 DIXIE SUN Pace 7 Lady Rebels downed by Utah Tech, Snow in league playoffs Dixie Colleges Lady Rebel Basketball team ran into some stiff compe-tio- n in the Region 18 tournament last weekend, as they were crushed by the in Utah Tech Lady Wolverines 95-6- 7 the opening round on Friday, and then contest to dropped a tough 85-7- 3 Snow College Saturday in Ephraim. The first loss to UTC thwarted any hopes the Lady Rebs may have had about advancing to the national tournament, while the Snow game determined the third and fourth place spots in the league. Against the Lady Wolverines, Dixie had trouble getting started, and fell behind 45-2- 7 by halftime. The Lady Rebels were never a threat to UTC the rest of the way, and the Wolverines coasted into the championship final. Against Utah Tech we couldnt get The only bright Spot for Dixie was JoAnne McDonald, who had 21 points, and six rebounds. LeRoy also pitched in with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Gubler had 10 points. The following night, the Lady 4 anything going, period, quipped coach Sherry Titus. They (Dixie) were real uptight, and real, real nervous. Titus said the main problem was the fact that her team had trouble handlrt pressure, which ing the UTC in turn led to several easy Wolverine baskets. Normally we break the press very Titus said. Thats (tureasily, novers) what gave them the early lead. For the game, the Lady Rebels committed a total of 37 turnovers eight each by sophomores Diane Gubler and Robin LeRoy while at the same time, only had nine team assists. r- ; - C bit Rebels appeared to totally out of sync, as they played a miserable first half, Dixie could not and fell behind 49-2get anything at all to work for them, and for all intent, had already accepted the loss. But in the second half, the Lady Rebs started putting things together, and slowly started chipping away at the lead. With about three minutes left in the game, Dixie had whittled the deficit down to six. once In the end though, it was simply too much Snow, and the Lady Badgers held on for the win. Against Snow it was the same thing (as the UTC game), in the first half no one wanted to score, my girls were so uptight, no one would shoot, Titus said. I think if there would have been three more minutes in the game, we would have won. One reason Dixie lost to Snow was because of their horrible shooting percentage. For the game, the Lady Rebs hit on only 28 of 88 from the field. McDonald again paced the team with 29 points, but connected on only 10 of 36 shots. LeRoy added 16 points, Sheila Sorenson 14, and Tina Hender- son 10. Despite the two losses, Titus was very pleased with her team, and their effort for the entire season. Im still pleased, Im proud of them, we made it to regionals, and that was our goal. Their attitudes were excellent, they worked hard, and never quit. Titus added, We were young, and think for the most part, to be at regionals, the pressure was so great on them. Sure Id rather win, but Im still happy, and wouldnt change anything. have a great bunch of kids, they I 1 were sad when it was over, but theyre proud of themselves, and theyre proud to be representing Dixie College, and 1 feel the same way. All in all, it should be a great tournament, and despite the fact there are at least 15 schools capable of taking the whole kitten caboodle, my Final Four selections are: UNLV, Depaul, Alabama, and North Carolina. |
