Page 6 DIXIE SDN March 13, 1987 FDGTR THE DIXIE SUN Rebels slug way to series sweep of Ricks College Brad Fullmer SUN Editor I '1 it The Dixie Rebel baseball team, currently 1 on the year, will look to further improve their record as they take on the Snow College Eadgers in a double-header at 12 00 Friday at Elks Field Saturday, Dixie will travel to Las Vegas to take on the College of Southern Idaho in a night game at UNLV Last weekend the Rebels met the Ricks Vikings in a four game series, on Friday and with double-header- s Saturday And, with some clutch pitching and timely hitting, Dixie managed to come out on top in all four contests Friday, the Rebels took game one as sophomore Kirk Woodruff blasted a two-ru- n home run in the bottom of the seventh inning In the second game, the Rebels used a bases-loade- d walk by Viking pitcher Sean Scanlon to eek out a 6-- 5 decision. On Saturday, although the games were completely different, the results were the same Dixie again swept both and 6 games, blasting Ricks 12-Game one saw the Rebels in full force at the plate, as they pounded out 14 hits, and scored all 12 runs in only four innings of action The game was called on account of the ten-ru- n rule after Ricks batted in the top of the fifth. Kyle Delange led the way offensively, as he went 3 for 3, including two home runs, a double, and four RBIs Darrin Ferguson and Shawn Whitehead also had good games, with each going 2 for 2 Ferguson also laced a double, while Whitehead smacked his second homer of the season. The nightcap was a bit closer than head coach Gordon Jolly would have liked to see, but Dixie still managed to claim the win Dixie fell behind 3 0 after the top of the first inning, but rallied, and eventually took a 4 lead The Vik6-but in the ings tied the score at fifth and sixth innings, the Rebels, behind singles by Jeff Lund, Chad Tanner, and Wendell Zink, scored three times, and starting pitcher Kirk Jensen worked his way out of a seventh-innin- g jam to give Dixie their seventh win of the year Jolley attributes his teams early success to a combination of things, including steady pitching, and a lot more experience than last year. This year weve got a lot more sophomores playing who have had that good experience, and the experience is definitely a factor, stated Jolley. Thats the main ingredient Pitching has been much better, I dont know if its great pitching, its just better pitching Right now Jolley has six hurlers which have proved their effectiveness to some extent. Returning ace Mike Johnson, who has an earned run average of 4 31, has turned in one real good performance, and picked up a win in the first game against Ricks, as he pitched the final inning without allowing a run. Jensen, who returned to Dixie LDS mission, has following a two-yebeen slightly inconsistent, losing a 3 decision against BYUs JV team, and allowing six runs against Ricks last Saturday Despite getting shelled somewhat (he has a team low ERA of 5 50), Jensen, however has proven his Dixie rightfielder Mike Larabee lines a pitch in- to left field for a basehit against the Ricks Vikings last weekend at Elks Field Larabee a sophomore transfer from BYU, has so ST GEORGE ability to work out of the tight situations, something that will help later on in the season. The biggest surprise on the team so far may the pitching performances turned in by freshman Mark Richeson. Richeson, who Jolley calls a pleasant surprise, has won both games he started, giving up only three runs in 12 innings of work, for an ERA of 1 .75 In addition, Richeson has a total of 17 strikeouts, including 14 in his first outing against BYU The games this weekend are very important according to Jolley, as his team will try and establish themselves as one of the top teams in the league Depaul, UNLV, N.C., and Bama should make Final Four Brad Fullmer SUN Editor Everytime a major sporting event takes place, no matter where it may be, there are always those people who try and defy all odds by predicting a winner. These people go absolutely wild placing bets, determining odds, anu trying to sucker someone into to putting a little money on the line. Most often than not this person comes out losing his shirt, but thats O K., there is always next year. I myself, being a huge follower of major sporting events, also like to wager a little cash on the big games. With the start of the NCAA tournament yesterday. I've already checked on the pairings of each regional, and have decided exactly what four teams will be shooting it out in New Orleans at the end of this month. Last year I got a little lucky when picked Louisville to take it all, and hopefully the results will be the same. In the West, look for UNLV to march to the Final Four. The Run-m- n Rebels are ranked number-on- e in the country, and with good reason Led by the sheer power of Armon Hammer Gilliam, and the outside shooting of Freddie Banks and Gerald Paddio, UNLV has perhaps the easiest schedule of the top teams in the tournament. The only other schools with a chance in the West are Iowa and maybe I Pittsburgh Back East, North Carolina is the but struggled in the latter stages of the season. No matter, the Tar Heels, picked at the first of the year to win it all, probably have more talent than any other club in the nation. N C. should have no trouble making it to the final eight. top-see- but will most likely have to face Syracuse or Purdue, teams that could very easily make it all the way In the Midwest, although Indiana is the number-on- e seed, the Hoosiers have played erratic at times for coach Bobby Knight, and rely a little too much on guard Steve Alford. Should Alford have an Indiana will be in trouble. Also in this regional are Duke, Depaul, St. Johns and Temple. Each of these schools have had good years, but I believe Depaul will emerge on top. The Blue Demons have never one an NCAA title, and always seem to choke in pressure situations. But this year Depaul is the Rodney Dangerfield of college basketball, and with senior Dallas Comegeys leading the way, they should make it to New Orleans. Another team that has a shot in this region is Temple. I think the Owls, continued on page 7 far played very steady for Dixie, as he has hit two homers and driven in six runs through eight games (SUN photo Kelly Moulton) Last year, Dixie split their series with Snow, and will be battling CSI for the first time ever. The reason they will be playing the Golden Eagles at UNLV Saturday night, is to give the sophomores a chance to show their skills to the coaches of BYU and UNLV, who also play Saturday night. One of the reasons were going to (Las) Vegas, is to get the sophomores some exposure to UNLVs coaches, and to BYUs coaches, Jolley said So Im going to pitch my sophomores If we go seven innings. Ill go with Johnson for four (innings), and Jensen three Jolley intends to go with Richeson on the mound for the first game Friday, and come back with Tim Kenney in game two, with a possibdity of pitching Brent Cude m relief. Offensively (through eight games), Darrin Ferguson leads the team in hitting, with an average of .438, including four doubles, three triples, and six RBIs Jeff Lund is second in batting average with a 407 mark, and has a team-hig- h eight RBIs. Other Rebels hitting well at the plate include Whitehead ( 350 average, two home runs, seven RBIs), Zink (.333, six RBl-- l, and Mike Larrabee (two HRs, seven RBIs).
