Show Page 12 DIXIE SUN February 13, 1987 Rebels down Ricks UTC, face rival Snow tonight Number-tw- o luck is involved. Brad Fullmer SUN Peter Johnson and Clint Rossum The wins arent always pretty, but when the chips are on the table, there may be no finer team in the country Dixie College ilian the second-ranke- d Rebels. Last weekend, the Rebels remained one of only two undefeated teams in the nation at 25-- 0 with victories over the Ricks Vikings, and the Utah Tech Wolverines Against Ricks on Friday night, Dixie again was forced to play catchup, as they fell behind early in the first half. With 37 seconds remaining to play, Rebel forward Steve Andrus converted a three-poiplay to tie the score at 75-7and send the game into overtime In the OT period, Dixie bolted out to a five point lead, and held on from there to record an 86-8- 3 victory Although the Rebels had to struggle as they have done so in manv of their games th's year, the performance added another notch in the win column "Well lake em anvwav we can get 'em," admitted Dixie coach Ken W 111 1111 ir agner In their last games, the Rebels hase won six bv lour points or less, a iigure that goes to show that the best teams sometimes are the luckiest "We're excited to be in that situation," said Wagner about being undefeated "I think good teams find ways to win, but I always feel a little " each finished with 18 points, offsetting a 31 point performance by the Vikings Greg Housekeeper. The Utah Tech game on Saturday night marked the end of two eras in Dixie Colege basketball history. By virtue of their 9 win, Dixie broke the record of 25 consecutive victories held by the 1984-8- 5 national championship team. It also was the last game that will be played in the old Dixie College Gymnasium. The Rebels close out the season in the brand new Dixie Center arena on Feb. 27lh and 28th. Wagner was satisfied with the way his team played over the weekend, and feels the Rebels have recovered from their recent offensive slump. We played awfully well Saturday night at times, said Wagner. If we just turn it around and do it for a whole game, and if we play better defense and make a few adjustments, then we should be better off. Tonight Dixie will collide with archrival Snow College in Ephraim at 7 30 Last time the two schools met, the Rebels held olf the gritty Badgers to score an 88-8- 4 victory, and W agner is expecting an even tougher challenge from Snow this time around expect a real battle, they have to win to get into the playol's, there is a lot ot pride involved, and our guys dont want to lose any games, he Because of the rilvary, they stated always play us tough, it should be a great game. :'x J f v 8 If Dixie happens to defeat Snow, it would more than likely assure the Rebels of no worse than a tie for first place in the conference, depending on the outcome of their rematch with the College of Southern Idaho on Feb. 20th in Twin Falls. As you may recall, last time the two junior college powers met, Dixie pulled out a 101-9- 9 thriller before a record crowd in the Dixie Gym, and the second confrontation should prove to be just as exciting. But Wagner is not one to overlook a team, and has not even thought CSI. All were about third-ranke- d worried about is Snow. They really hurt us inside last time. For the year, Clint Awesome Rossum leads the team in scoring with a 17.0 average, and also had the game bucket against the North Idaho Cardinals up in Couer d Alene on Feb. 13th. and Peter Roger McDonald Johnson follow Rossum in the scoring column with 15.9 and 15.7 averages respectively winning McDonald also leads the team m re- bounding with a 6 4 clip, while Rob Ross and Craig Hopkins are the leading playmakers Ross averages 4 4 assists per game.
