Like a bad dream in which you cannot effect the outcome. Choiceless decisions made in futility. No thinking, no judging, only acting, and acting in order to survive. This in a nutshell is what the new movie Platoon about. Imagine youself walking out of a transport plane straight from the United States. Youre a fresh recruit who is placed into a strange and foreign land. Youve been taught how to survive through a war, but to your dismay, you discover that survival is largely just a matter of luck. One could survive a hail of bullets, or be killed by a hidden booby-traPlatoon shows how easily one could be killed in a war. Too often we watch Sylvester Stallone kill hundreds of men effortlessly and apparently without any moral consequence. We pay whores like Chuck Norris to degrade the reality and sanctity of life and death. Believe in these idiotic fools my friends, and see how long it takes for our beloved President, Ronald Reagan, to send us into a similar situation as was that of Viet Nam. Platoon is one of the few (if not only) movies that display war as it truly is: bloody, horrible, insane, idiotic, evil, destructive and cruel. A periences of Stone. What better way is there to understand the Viet Nam experience than that through the eyes of an actual vet? One particular scene in the movie, shows Chris Taylor (played by Charlie Sheen) emptying his gun at the feet of a terrorized villager. This is an actual account of Stone's wartime experience. For the most part, Chris Taylor is Oliver Stone in 1967. The movie centers around the effects of war on a young man and the struggle for him to retain his sanity and soul. The old conflict of good and evil is a main attraction in this movie. In a is way, unique Stone shows the possibilities for both characteristics to occupy the same body. The conscienceless Sergeant Barnes, represents all that is cruel in the human spirit. Sergeant Elias on the other hand, is what can be respected and admired by people. Chris follows Elias and tries to be like him, but to his dismay, he finds both characters within himself. Chris summerizes his torn soul in the movies final scene by saying, I felt like a child born of the two fathers, (Barnes and Elias). War usually provokes the worst possibilities of human behavior for the simple sake of survival. Some vets feel that Platoon will revive some of the Viet Nam veteren stereotypes (the baby killer, butcher of innocent villagers, etc.). A vet was quoted in Time as saying, I hope that I dont have to return to the closet and hide. I dont believe that is what will happen. I would hope that Stones portrait of shattered innocence goes beyond peoples prejudices. The factual (to my limited knowledge) accounts of Stone's experiences, helps us who had not participated in Viet Nam, understand the huge stress of combat. 5 e D 50 everything which are off except new clothes 25 off 5 minutes $5.00 GRAB A BAG SALE Ask Robin Red Dress for a bag. 5 KEMP KORNER 628-176- 5 5 on-a- ir disclaimers, and broadcast time for U.N. represenatives to respond.
