Show Page 4 - THE DIXIE SUN - November 18, 1977 My First Queen Contest By Marilee Camp No way, was my first response to Jim Olsen, when he asked me to represent the Radio Club in the Homecoming Queen Contest. I laughed at the idea of showing my body to several judges, let alone make up a talent and be ready to perform in only 6 days. Yet, the next day I found myself making a committment. Immediately there was an application set in front of me which had to be in Rudy Iversons office by 4.00 p.m. It was nearly 2 00 p.m. I scribbled the information onto the printed form without any thought as to what I was writing. I quickly found a old picture of me, stapled it to the form and left it on Rudy's desk with several others. My first mistake was complete. I had written Gymnastic Dance" as my talent on the paper, so I decided that was what I had better do. I didnt realize until I arrived home, ready to work on it, that it wasn't such a good idea after all. First I selected my music. (Easier said than done). The song I chose had some scratches in it. I set out to find a better copy of the song.. Several hours later, as well as several recordings later . and even a version or two later (besides the many footsteps), I finally went to Gibsons and purchased a new album. (Identical to the one I had at home, with the exception of the scratches.) Deciding the song was too long, I thought it would be best to cut out the middle section. After an hour or so (including crawling on my hands and knees to find a small black line on the brown recording tape), it was complete. I held in my hands a tape 1:53 minutes long and hours in dimension. Making up a dance was another problem. I hadnt taken any dance classes for several years and no creative ideas came to mind. Throughout the time I spent working on my routine, I had to sacrifice homework, put in my loyal hours at Safeway, try to get skinny (but eating my gut out, nervously), finish making my evening gown, find a swimsuit and some leotards, besides . . listening to the constant singing of our broken toilet. I figured it couldnt be all bad. At least I didnt lose a heel from my shoe. The big day finally arrived. Nov. 1, 1977 I found myself hurrying from one place to another in a state of frustration. I walked back and forth, to and from the Student Union Building at least three or four times, making sure I wouldn't be late for my interview, while trying to practice my dance as much as possible. The day was filled with many happenings. After interviews we had swimsuit competition, (which they could have done without) then evening gown competition, followed by a luncheon. I didnt think to count all of the safety pins floating around, or the combs, bobby pins or even all of the transferable bra cups. The womens restroom was too small to fit 31 girls preparing themselves for a beauty contest, so the mens room was opened to allow more room. It was quite a surprise to see a man walk in, but I imagine he was quite surprised, too! I had a chance to take a peek at the nights program to make sure my name was printed correctly, (a minor catastrophe that happens often). That was when I found out that I wassponsered by the Rodeo Club. I didnt even know Dixie College had a Rodeo Club. I'm not prejudiced, but I would much rather be classified as a radio fan, instead of a goatroper. I cant say I lost out completely by not placing in the contest. I can say Ive gained 30 new friends and a lot of exercise. Ive learned what a true friend is by those who have helped me, and wished me luck. Ive also gained a great experience. Not only that, I even got a kiss from a young man in the night performance. g Curtis Pq Is Dial D-I-- X ; By Marilee Camp bbbrrringggl. fans! Payne.
