Show THE DIXIE SUN PAGE 4 ICAC Tennis From The Editor's Pen Finals By KEROS BROWN The Dixie College tennis team, which has made about as much impact as a solitary raindrop in the Dixie desert, will play their second match this week end at Grand Junction, Colorado. This will be the ICAC championships, and it finds our Rebels with very little experience and virtually no wins behind them. The only other match has been the match with Snow here at Dixie, and the only win that the Rebels could salvage lob there, was Johnny Barrus win in which he drove his opponent crazy. It may be said in our netters defense, that Snow is probably the most powerful team in the conference, and will probably humiliate everyone with the same abandon that they did the Rebels. Ralph Atkin and Garth Pickett anchor the squad, and, Ralph has found great inspiration in the team mascot, Cheri Bennett. In fact, in order to improve his luck, Ralph has adopted the practice of walking around campus with his arm around the mascot. Rebels Sweep Snow The Dixie Rebel baseball team wound up its season in a winning fashion, taking both ends of a 0 and doubleheader against Snow College at Ephraim in games that were literally in the snow. The weather was more suited for a snowball fight than a baseball game. The Rebels braved the cold and came up with the best offensive display so far this year, but it almost went for naught due to the errors that punctuated the game. In the first game Les Mathson went all the way finally coming out on top with the aid of the booming Rebel bats. It was definitely not a day for pitching, and Les would much rather have had his fingers in his pockets than on the seams of that cold baseball, but by thawing out between innings Les finished. Between kicking the ice from their spikes, and observing the clouds of steam that their breath produced in front of their faces, the infielders managed to field about 50 of the balls hit to them. The victory was of the come-frobehind variety, with Stu Howell, Phil Tuckett and Tom Hudson supplying the punch. Howell and Hudson both had thre hits, one of Hudsons being a two run homer. Tuckett chipped in with two timely hits, but it was Howells clutch double with the bases loaded that assured a Rebel win. In the second game the weather from Tundra to arctic changed but the Rebels were just one victory from finishing the season at .500 and they wernt going to let a little think like a blizzard stop them. Pitcher Dave Kelly opened the gates to Snow by yielding a two run homer, but after that, he was as stingy as the weatherman, and the final score was Phil Tuckett supplied the key hits again, and Coach Allred decided that Phils Dad should have attended every game this year if his presence would always inspire Phil as it did this day. 13-1- 5-- 2 Springtime in Dixie must be experienced to be believed. This is the time that makes Dixie addicts of everyone who ever attends school here. Fall and Winter quar ters, this is a College, with strong emphasis put on competitive athletics, and everyone not so involved, is either busily engaged in getting good grades, or finding fault with the heavy accent put o.r the athletics, or both. Social organizations work frantically to promote the social climber image, and each organization trys to outdo the other. Six Records Fall Last Saturday the Dixie College track team breezed to a first place in the annual invitational meet held here. The Rebels received 97 points reand Mesa who were runners-uceived 38 points. Snow College was third with 24 points and Nevada Southern came in last with a total of 15 points. The Dixie cindermen collected all but five first places and set p Statistics cold-finger- m 5-- FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1965 Player Howell Caputo Loughton Hudson Loughton Tuckett Cuff Kindle Christian Nelson Malnar Pitching Ivory Kelly Mathson ab h hr rbiavg. .37 14 0 7 .379 34 13 1 7 .382 33 11 0 6 .384 38 14 2 7 .369 11 33 0 6 .333 36 10 1 11 .279 38 9 1 7 .237 24 5 1 8 .208 6 13 14 2 0 1 0 1 0 2 .333 0 .091 0 .088 W L SO 3 18 2 1 19 3 2 30 1 Then, just as charmingly as the Spring weather that announces it, Spring quarter arrives, and suddenly Dixie College becomes one big happy family. Every one knows everyone else. Spring sports are sort of an informal affair, with the strongest accent put on getting a suntan.
