Show THE DIXIE SUN February 16, 1962 Dixisna Addition o o o o Astrodiagnosis By CARRICK LEAVITT By Carrick Leavitt write this column with mixed feelings. I write with some degree of happiness, a touch of sadness, and a great deal of wonderment. At the first of the season, (basketball, for those who just got tuned in, or have hangovers) I said that it sure looked like a good year for the Rebels, that they ought to punch their way back east. They responded by immediately dropping down to 5th place in the league, and then slowly working back up the ladder. Nothing like doing things the hard way. Anyhow, Rays golden boys are fighting for 3rd at the present. First place they should have had, third place they are jockeying for. I use the term because Carbon College also has jockeying, some claims to that sovereign position. Even Dixieites can disthough real pute Carbon by pointing, throwing rocks at, or otherwise indicating the results of last Saturdays exhibition, the record still doggedly insists that the two schools have a third place tie for the present. For the true blue fans benefit, the ones who braved truck clogged highways to watch important games like their hometown high schools over the week end, Twin Palms J. C., Dixie College to those so unappreciative of nature to notice even the localist of local shrubbery, encountered, thoroughly subdued, got a few tears from, and more or less enjoyed a pleasant little victory over Carbon College last Saturday evening. The score was 98 to 86, and a boy named Dave Erickson got 34 points for our side. We even had a little victory dance after Mitch, Im speaking of the janitor Mitch, swept the coal dust from the gym floor. This week end those latter day gladiators get three square meals a day and an enjoyable trip to the northlands. They play Ricks and Weber, in inverted order. Until they come home, only the great benefactor up above, the one who watches over basketball games, knows the outcome. Experts say those Johnny Rebs will ruin the victory dance presently in the planning stages at Ricks. And the Rebels will taste blood at Weber, their own blood, however. I say, what ever will be, depends on the players to be. In other words, Don't spend all your time squandering unemployment checks in the Expresso Fist, (Big Hand Cafe) but sallie forth and return forthwith towing a couple of victories. If above requested little tidbit is dutifully carried out, I can promise, like the prophet Joseph, this school will be as envied as a large labor union with nothing but paid up members. I dyed-in-the-wo- ol Dixie Debaters To Flyers Upend Region Standings The Dixie Flyers put region tens Dixie Division in topsy turvy condition last Friday night when they clubbed league leading Cedar City over the head with a 38 to 40 upset. The scene of action was the spacious Rebel Gymnasium. Supporters for both sides were on their feet for the bigger part of the confrom the test as victory teams. The of both grasp desparate first quarter saw underdog Dixie out in front 13 to 7. Half time found the fidgety Dixie five leading 23 to 19 and as the third quarter terminated the desparate Flyers trailed 32 to the Redmens 34. In the final fourth of play bedlam broke out as one team gained a ever so slight, advantage, then the other. Friday night the Flyers trekked to Enterprise. The Wolves were runners up in league standing and were anxious to break the present deadlock, but the Dixie Flyers came through again see-sawe- 69-4- 5. d Attend Yeber Meet j Twenty-fiv- e members of the Dixie Forensics Club, instructed by Mrs. Pansy L. Hardy, traveled north to Ogden the 15th of February, where they engaged in the three- day Weber Iinvitational Forensics Meet. Dr. Leland H. The scorelock indifferently spelled out a tally to a half filled gym. Coach Brooks pointed his first five at the shakey Cowboys, said, "sic em, and simply sat down. The boys went to work; the first half buzzer interrupted them just as they shook their 34th point from the bedraggled foe. The Cowboys picked up their 5 field goals and five foul shots and headed for the lockers. The third quarter they were able to find the bucket only once from the field, twice from the lanes. The score was 55 to 19. 69-2- 9 Dick Blake, lanky Flyer center, monopolized the boards on both ends of the court as he ambitously rolled the apple through the hoop 13 times from the field in three quarters. He picked up four foul shots in the process. Result at the end of three quarters: Blake 30, Kanab 19. Highscoreman for the Cowboys was Young with 10 points. He and his teammates didnt let up for an instant, but things simply refused to go right, as Flyer guards Esplin and Wilson brought the ball down, shot from inside or Out and handed to Blake. Control player Booth got his share of rebounds and 9 points, McArthur couldnt have been re-- I sponsible for more assists if someone had handed him a spoon. The night of the 16th the group will attend the Weber and Dixie College basketball game held there; Dixie Reb-- j els should be very pleased to have some rooters from home. There is something new in Dixie. With no state appropriation neces-- I sary a new wing is being added to the main building of the Dixiana, girls dorm for Dixie College stu-- I dents. The new addition will have six apartments which will house four girls to an apartment. Two girls share each bedroom-study- ; four girls share a kitchenette.
