Utah alone visits to the five national parks have increased 69 since 1980 At Capitol Reef visitation increased 100 percent in the past seven years Parking lots at Zion National Park often fill to capacity on summer days Getting a camping spot at Arches is like finding a gold piece in your change drawer Speaking at this week's Interagency Tourism Conference in Park City National Park Service director James Ridenour cited some frightening statistics about park visitation Marketing campaigns he said reduced the percentage of national park visitation occurring during the peak summer months from 95 to 78 Unforunately the total number of park visitors has increased so dramatically and there has been no decline in the number of visits during the peak season This means national parks are staying crowded for longer periods of time The promotion of United States parks as a destination to foreign tourists is helping to increase the crowding As much as 40 of the visitors at some of the major park attractions hail from out of the United States The crowding situation has become so serious that Ridenour told a Hinckley Institute of Politics meeting Monday that the time may be fast approaching when tourists will need to make day use reservations to visit some of the most popular parks during the peak season Some of the best minds in the tourist business gathered at Park City to discuss ways to help alleviate the crowding at the major parks One of the solutions suggest-le- d and it's an excellent one is to utilize less public lands located near popular national parks This Hunters Will Have Best Chance at Success By Brett Prettyman THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE I The 1992 general season elk hunt should be a successful venture for hunters who have done their homework "Hunters who have scouted an area and know where the elk are should do well" said Wes Shields big game program coordinator with the Division of Wildlife Resources The hunt runs Wednesday to Oct 13 The deadline for purchasing an elk license is Tuesday at midnight According to officials the primary purpose for the cutoff is to curtail people from taking extra animals and then buying a permit to prevent being caught for poaching "It's not fair for some people to abuse the system while the vast majority of hunters are lawfully hunting and and harvesting their animals" said Shields Avoid the possibility of not getting a license by buying early Some stores may run out before you get there An early fall will make for a colorful and different atmosphere for hunters High elevation hunters will find many trees have already shed their leaves which ak HUNTING ri1MMEMEMOMEMEMEINNIEffil elk herds in this region are in good shape and scattered thoughout the gional game manager range saki Dave Olsen A wet "We are trying to provide a more normal social structure by allowing larger bulls to breed" said wildlife biologist Bruce Guinta "The yearling bull regulation will provide the opportunity for people to see and hear big bulls Eventually hunters will have a chance at a trophy bull" Shields predicts about a 15 overall success rate for elk this year Here is the outlook for each region in the state established by the US Yacht Racing Union and Olympic yachting Folks like Californian Wayne Schafer who has been involved with Hobie almost from the time Alter moved out of surfing is one of those who created the which has proven the backbone of Hobie Cats popularity The lifestyle goes beyond sailing to include the occasional water balloon barrage shoreside golf and any number of events designed to add enjoyment to a simple sailing event Hansel!
