The early Greeks and Romans sent holly boughs to their friends as a token of their friendship. Today it is-symbol of good wishes and good cheer. The Romans then began exchanging gifts of sweets, candles, lamps, copper, silver and gold. This is probably the most recent origin of exchanging Christmas gifts. If your children have long lists that seem impossible to fill, that also is not new. The Emperor Caligula upset his subjects by publishing an edict a listing what he expected in the way of presents and stood on the stoop of his palace to receive them in person. Today, in some countries gifts are exchanged on Christmas day, but in many countries they are exchanged at Epiphany (Jan. 6) to commemorate the coming of the three wise men to Bethlehem, bearing gifts for the Christ child the ancient reason given for the origin of exchanging gifts. from the past to "ttfe, and yet we are Ms. Ashcroft "really unaware of the history of the traditions In northern Europe, St. Martin and later St. Nicholas awarded good children nuts, fruits and sweets and those that had misbehaved with rods and switches. The Dutch called St. Nicholas Santa Klaus and he was taken by them to America and became Santa Claus. The Christmas card is a purely English invention. In the early part of the last century it became the custom for English school children to write and decorate Christmas pieces for , their parents. In 1843 Sir Henry Cole and John Horsley created a more i professional version of the Christmas -pieces and the Christmas card was born. People should say This was good Q)r us. We are better because of this ; event. Ms. Curran cited examples of ; stress and with how it was dealt. A woman who had experienced a d fair amount of stress before her died, handled her widowhood far more successfully than the wom-!a- n who had never been challenged. ! Another situation ; is unemployment. In this situation, when the father ; lost his job, one family really pulled together. They looked at solutions ;and answers. Another family was fragmented by unemployment. Unemployment can break up a family. ! Inner Strength If the family has inner strengths, everyone manages, according to Ms. Curran. Humor is also valuable when confronting stress. Laughter helps nd humor can diffuse the tension, she explained. For parents and other family 'members, adolescence can shake the .balance of family life. The best approach for families who have adolescents at home is to adopt the old slogan 'This, too, shall pass, Ms. Curran said. Surprisingly, it does.
