Volunteers from the Utah Heritage Foundation talked to hikers at places like the Devereaux House, the Capitol Theatre, the Continental Bank Builing, the Walker Bank Building, the Promised Valley Playhouse, the Hansen Planetarium, the Alta Club, the Beehive House and Temple Square. e The walk through downtown Salt Lake City started at the Devereaux House at the Triad Center, went to West Temple, up 200 South to State Street, north to South Temple, turned north on Main Street, west on North Temple and wound its way back West Temple to South Tem two-mil- 533-612- The Council also has an interesting free brochure called Walking: The Ideal Exercise for Every Sole" available. The brochure details the benefits of walking, guidelines for setting up a walking physical fitness program and suggestions for appropriate dress and footwear. It also offers an awards program incentive for those walking 100 miles. In order to receive the award, hikers must walk at a brisk pace at least four times per week at 20 permits per session. For someone looking for an interesting way to spend a Saturday morning, doing the historical trek through Salt Lake City on your own offers some excellent opportunities to learn about the city. ; BFG's Newest Best Valuo Jfesaver gtt4 Tours of the Devereaux House are, for example, available Saturday mornings. Walkers can enjoy a guided tour of the Beehive House daily except Sundays. Tours are also available through Temple Square. In addition, a hiker could take a few moments to view the museum displays at the Hansen Plantarium. Those looking for a little more exercise can walk up State Street to Capitol Hill and tour Council Hall, the State Capitol Building itself and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum on Main Street. The Dinwoody Park on 100 South between Main Street and West Temple is an excellent place to get a drink of water, eat a picnic lunch and take a walking break. The Capitol Grounds or the lawn around the Salt Palace and Symphony Hall are also good places to take a break. Though not a natural area, Salt Lake City has much to offer in the way of walking tours. It is a good place to start a hiking exercise pro gram because the sidewalks are in excellent shape and most walks are easy.
