By Genevieve H. Folsom Tribune Garden Editor Welcome spring with bright flowering bulb blooms. It is a real thrill to walk outdoors in the early spring sometimes even before the snow is off the ground and see the crocuses and snowdrops with their bright colors. These minor bulb flowers are followed by the daffodils and later by the tulips. Your nurseryman will have a variety of spring flowering bulbs which can go into the garden now. If careful in selecting, you can have bloom from early March to early June. Spring flowering bulbs can also There are ange, lime and dvsarf types for placing in the rock garden. The trumpet daffodil is perhaps the most popular. be forced for flowering indoors in January and February. Daffodils are the delight of the spring garden. They come from Africa, the Orient, England and Greece. Today most of our spring flower bulbs, however, come from Holland. You can use daffodils in many ways in the garden. They are delightful naturalized under the trees or plant a clump or two be-side the pool. If naturalized daffo--i dils, they can stay! in one place for a period of time and will multiply each4 year. Keep the bulbs watered until the ground freezes. King Alfred, a big yellow, is typical of these. They make a gorgeous show when planted with the Red Emperor tulip. The large cupped daffodils have shorter cups than the trumpet types. The small cupped types have even smaller cups, less than a third of the length of the petals. You will enjoy the lovely double daffodils. For earliest bloom, try the miniature trumpet daffodils. Some have a nice fra- grance. Daffodils should be planted at least deep except the miniatures which will go into the ground about 4 locainches. Place in a tion. If naturalizing, add a little humus to the soil before planting When naturalizing, take a handful of bulbs, toss them on the ground and plant 8 inches well-drain- fa-D- Most Popular Tulips are the most popular of the spring flowering bulbs and are best planted in October. They, like the daffodils, do best when planted about 8 inches deep. Give a good soil that is well drained. Plant them in groupings of a dozen or more bulbs of a single color and variety for the best effect. Plant them singly or dig out a space large enough to plant the bulbs. It should be deep enough so the bulbs will be 8 inches deep when planted. Set them in place with pointed ends up. Then cover around them with top soil. Water well. The vivid colors and interesting forms make the tulips delightful garden subjects. Try some more unusual tulips such as the Parrots with their unusual marking and exotic ers These can be naturalized under the trees or in the lawn. Chinondoxa or Glory of the Snow has blue flowers and is an early bloomer. Mascarj or grape hyacinth has clusters of bellshaped flowers in blue, purple or white. They flower in April and look well with daffodils or pink tulips. For something a little different, plant Allium. They will flower in the spring and some will flower in June with the roses. Most have balls of tiny flowers. Colors are white, purple, mauve, pink, blue or yellow. Plant them three times the depth of the bulb. Give them a sunny location and good drainage. An important item in grow ing tulips is not to remove the foilage until it has turned brown and died down. It is needed to mature the bulb for next years flowering This holds true for other spring flowering bulbs as well. Lovely Fragrance Hyacinths have lovely fragrance and are beautiful. Their spikes of florets come in many colors from blue to lilac to deep purple. Then there are the red, rose, pink, orange, yellow and white ones. Try a row or two of the hyacinths along the walk or plant a bed near the doorway w here you can enjoy their perfume. I he minor bulbs are best planted in mass effect. The bulbs should be set 4 inches deep and an equal distance apart. They are lovely planted beneath trees or in front of shrubs. Sy, New York City Dear Sy: Some drugs can result in cataract forma- tion in certain situ- ations. However, air pollution has not been shown to be a cause of cataracts. Dear Dr. Solo-moWith all the r jj I mi d, discussion about Reye s syndrome and how it might be connected to aspirin, I dont remember reading anything about what Reyes syndrome actually is. Could you mention something about its symptoms and why it Mrs. D.L, Topeka, is so serious? Kan. Dear Mrs. L.: Reyes syndrome most often occurs in children between 6 and 14 years of age. It often begins in a child who previously appeared to be well. The symptoms include severe vomiting, confusion, b- izarre behavior and sometimes extreme sleepiness that may gress to coma. Submit The conditon is potentially fatal and requires immediate medical attention. Dear Dr. Solomon: Do all children have ear problems? When I think of my own children and my neighbors children and my nieces and nephews, it seems to me that they all have trouMrs. G.G., ble with their ears. Waco, Texas Dear Mrs. G.: Dr. Heinz Eichen-walof the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Dallas, estimates that by the time a child is 2, nearly 1 out of every 3 has had at least three episodes of middle ear inflammation (otitis). These episodes may recur until the child is about 5 or 6, at which time their frequency begins to diminish. Moreover, if you can hold out until the child is 8, you can expect ear inflammation to be rare. Dear Dr. Solomon: I hear a lot of people talking about how other people arent as sharp as they used to be as they grow older, but I dont see this at all. Is there anything to this? Mrs. A.S., Davenport, Iowa Dear Mrs. Su Dr. K. Warner Schaie of Pennsylvania State University says that a person's mental ability can be maintained or even improved with advancing age. In one study, the a pro- mental abilities of 2,000 people were measured every seven years over a period of SO years. The results showed that only after age 80 did the average persons mental performance drop below the middle range established for young adults. Dr. Schaie further reports that people who led active lives during their middle years either remained stable or showed improvement in their mental abilities after age 60; those who did not lead stimulating lives showed a decline. Dear Dr. Solomon: I keep hearing about how important it is to have selenium in the diet because it prevents Dear Vince: The results of animal studies suggest that selenium has a protective effect against cancer. In addition, it appears that geographic areas that have low selenium levels in the soil have a higher rate of cancer than do geographic areas that have high selenium levels. The strongest association between the levels of selenium and the incidence of cancer appears to involve breast and colon cancer. 800 WE SAVED However, although selenium is an essential trace element, too much can be toxic. Since the specific level at which toxicity might occur has not been defined, supplementation may therefore carry some risk. Dear Dr. Solomon: My children seem to get prickly heat fairly often. What causes it and what can be done Mrs. K.N., Decatur, 111. about it? Dear Mrs. N.: Prickly heat results when there is some impairment in the sweating mechanism. Treatment, ditioning can be very helpful in this respect. 4 For Pauline, Columbia, S.C- - Both statements are correct.
