Vacations can be taxing especially in certain states by Virginia Robicheaux Tribune Washington Bureau since none are imposed there, the survey notes though this November, Oregon voters will be asked whether to impose a 5 per cent sales and use tax no later than Jan. 1, 1988. As for gasoline prices right now, the analysis shows that state gasoline tax increases since last summer are pushing up prices at the pumps in Arizona (15 cents a gallon) and Colorado (18 cents), as well as in Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. The biggest jump in the state gasoline tax rate, in fact, the analysis notes, was in Utahs neighbor, Colorado up 6 cents per gallon from 12 cents followed by a hike in Kentucky. Tennessee and Virginias gas tax rates are shown as up 4 cents per gallon, while Montanas rate is up 2 cents per gallon effective the first of this month. And in Connecticut, Iowa, Oregon and Wisconsin, travelers are paying one cent more per gallon than last summer, the survey shows. Where Colorado may have had the highest jump in state gas tax rates, the study shows the highest gas tax in the nation right now is in Nebraska 19 cents per gallon (as opposed to 14 cents in Utah). Tying Colorados gallon rate is Washington, followed by Wisconsin (17.5 cents), and Connecticut, Minnesota, Montana and Tennessee (17 cents per gallon). as As for state cigarette taxes the whole Utah congressional delegation crusades against tobacco use because of its possible health hazards the survey shows that state cigarette taxes have increased by 8 cents per pack in Alaska, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Oregon and Washington, by 7 cents per pack, in Mississippi; by 5 cents per pack in Florida and New Mexico, and by 1 6 cents perpack in Rhode Island Smokers departing Utah northeasterly might want to WASHINGTO- N- The millions of Americans still planning to roam the country this year on vacations should prepare themselves for higher state sales, gasoline and cigarette taxes in many locales, according to a survey by Commerce Clearing House. And additionally notes Commerce Clearing House, which reports on tax and business law and related developments in a number of countries, some vacation destinations will be found to have admissions, in and alcohol beverage levies addition to the federal cigarette tax per pack and the gallon federal gasoline tax . As of this July 1, in fact, notes the analysis, only the District of Columbia and 28 states continued to impose their state gasoline, sales and cigarette taxes at the same rate as last summer. On the other hand, the survey shows Utah as unique in having lowered its sales tax rate from 4 58 to 3 3864 per cent. Since July 1, 1985, for neighboring Idaho is noted as having increased its sale tax rate from 4 to 5 cents, while Kansas has increased its sales tax rate from 3 to 4 per cent, and New Mexico from 3.75 to 4.75 per cent. In contrast to Utahs reduced 4 3864 percent sales tax rate, the survey shows that the District of Columbia and 22 states including Arizona now (5 percent) and Nevada (5.75) impose sales taxes of 5 per cent or more. Connecticuts sales tax rate of 7.5 per cent is noted as continuing to be the highest in the nation, while the least taxing situations of that nature this vacation season are to be found in Colorado, Georgia, North Carolina, which all Virginia and Wyoming have the lowest sales taxes, at only 3 per cent. But those visiting Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire or Oregon will pay no state sales taxes. pari-mutu- Drink bottled water even in good sanitation areas Dr. Karl Neumann by buy cartons of cigarettes in Wyoming, since the cigarette tax there is shown as only 8 cents per pack (contrasted to 12 cents in Utah, 15 cents in Arizona and New Mexico, 20 cents in Colorado, and 9.1 cents per pack in Idaho). Although Minnesota has increased its cigarette tax rate by 6 cents per pack, the analysis notes that cigarette users traveling there will find that levy basically going up in smoke, since a credit is allowed for any fed- eral cigarette tax paid (presently, 16 cents per pack). But its North Carolina through which so many local travelers route themselves to buy cigarettes that still has the lowest cigarette tax rate in the country only 2 cents per the survey shows. pack On the other hand, Washington State has the highest effective cigarette tax rate, at 31 cents per pack, the analysis notes. As contrast for those planning only in the Intermountain states in these dying dog days of summer, the survey notes the following state gasoline, sales and cigarette taxes (in cents), as of this July 1: Utah: (14) (4 3864) (12); Nevada: (11.25) (5.75) (15); Arizona: (16) (5) (15); New Mexico (11) (4.75) (15); Colorado: (18) (3) (20); Idaho (14.5) (5) (9.1); Wyoming (8) (3) (8). For those traveling to New York for a latent look at the refurbished Statue of Liberty, the respective state levies are noted as 8 cents per gallon for gasoline; 4 per cent sales tax, and a cigarette tax of 21 cents per pack. Going to Florida to work on your tan? The respective rates will be 4 cents, 5 per cent, and 24 cents. Going to New Orleans, La., to eat pralines and hear some good jazz? The Pelican State gas tax was noted as 16 cents per gallon the same as the state tax per pack of cigarettes. LONDON FR. Wide-Bod- y, When traveling abroad, get in the habit of drinking bottled water rather than tap water. It is a simple, inexpensive and readily available way to help you stay healthy. Drink bottled water even in areas of good sanitation northern Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The reason: water systems everywhere contain microorganisms. While you are accustomed to those in your water at home, the ones in other countries may be sufficiently different to cause you mild intestinal upsets, especially the first few days you drink it. Very likely, in areas of good sanitation, some of the intestinal upsets blamed on jet lag, overeating, rich and unusual food and too many alcoholic drinks are, in fact, water related. And who needs that? And in areas of questionable sanitation the rest of the world where the incidence of intestinal upsets among visitors ranges from ten to fifty percent, estimates are that water is the cause of about two thirds of the problems. In the Soviet Union, for example, many water systems contain a diarrhea causing organism, giardia, which generally causes symptoms a week or two after you are back home from your trip. Also, in most developing coun- tries, little is known about Aiemi-ca- l contaminants in the water. Very likely, such contaminants are present in some areas. Also important for your health overseas is the water used in kitchens of hotels and restaurants for washing dishes, cleansing vegetables, making ice cubes and for other purposes. In areas of good sanitation, tap water is generally used in kitch- - $599 RT regularly ens. In such areas, the type and connumber of tained in the limited amount of tap micro-organis- water from these sources are un- likely to make you ill. This, however, is not true in areas of questionable sanitation. There, even the limited amount of water that you swallow from ice cubes, cleansing vegetables and washing dishes may make you ill. In such areas your best bet for avoiding intestinal illnesses is staying and eating at the deluxe hotels of large international hotel chains. Generally, these hotels have elaborate protocols to insure safe water: local water fs refil-tereadditional chlorine is added, the hotel itself runs bacterial analysis of its water from various places within the hotel and samples are sent for further analysis to independent outside laboratories. In these hotels only such water is used for making ice cubes, washing dishes and cleansing vegetables. In other restaurants in areas of even questionable sanitation ones with good reputations and which cater to tourists avoid ice cubes and salads and drink bottled water only. The reason: you have no way of knowing what kind of water is being used. However, dishes and silverware at these restaurants are generally safe. The minute amounts of water that may Sdhere to dishes and glasses generally will cause you no problem. In areas of good sanitation and in deluxe hotels in other areas, tap water is generally safe for brushing teeth. Elsewhere, use bottled water. In your bathroom, tie a bright colored ribbon around the faucet to remind yourself not to drink the tapwater. In India, China and in some other developing countries many hotels provide open canisters of water in your room. Since you have no way of knowing where the water comes from, use bottled water. , Bottled water is available in all hotels and restaurants that cater to tourists. Bottles are less expensive at local stores than in the hotels. Keep a few bottles in your room. Besides bottled water, other safe beverages to drink are beer, wine, liquors, carbonated drinks, coffee and tea. In areas of questionable sanitation, especially in the tropics, when going on excursions, carry bottled water and soft drinks. Also carry paper cups and straws. If you buy soft drinks or water from local establishments, drink the beverage from its container rather than glasses or cups provided by the establishment. In areas of questionable sanitation be suspect of juices and fruit drinks not prepared in your presence. Tap water may be added. Use only water you would drink for other hygienic purposes: cleaning contact lenses, rinsing dentures, and irrigating colostomies, for example. Very handy for brushing teeth and making tea or coffee in your room is an electric immersion coil. Boiling water for five minutes will destroy virtually all rganisms. Depending on the country, you may need a current converter and a plug adaptor for your electric immersion coil. One caution about bottle water: If you are on a special diet, check the label for ingredients. Some waters contain high concentrations of sodium, calcium and other minerals.
