Show 4 1) A The Sail Lake Tribune Wednesday Vugust 1 1, 19BG DWR Protects Utahs Native Trout By Kevin CJraveline Tribune Staff Writer When the pioneers settled the Salt Lake Valley over 100 years ago, the area's rivers and streams teemed with the only trout native to the area - the Bonneville cutthroat. Today, there is only a remnant population left of the once abundant fish, but biologists at the Department ol Wildlife Kesourc's are working to change that The future of the Bonneville lies mainly with Bed Butte Creek, east of the Imversity of Utah campus. Bed Butte Creek is located in Bed Butte Canyon Besearch Natural Area, a location which has been little affected by human activity since the settlement of the Salt Lake cut-ihro- Valley. As a result, the stream is still in the same general condition it was when the Bonneville was the only trout in the area. Biologists are hoping it will be ideal habitat for the rare fish. The stream currently contains rainbow trout, and possibly some Yellowstone cutthroats, which is why biologists are holding back on the project. They do not want to take a chance of a remnant population of rainbows or cutthroats hybridizing with the Bonneville, which would dilute the pure strain. "We mainly want to treat the stream and get the Bonneville cutthroat restored to the drainage," said Glenn Davis, the program coordina tor for fisheries management. "We treated the stream in 1983 with rote-non- e a chemical that removes the oxygen from the water, killing the fish), but apparently we didn't get all the fish." "Bight now we're looking to see where the fish are and how we missed them," he said, "and what we have to do to get them." And while there are not very many fish left in the stream, there are enough to cause problems. "Weve hurried on these projects before," Davis said, "and we end up getting burned when we do. The problem usually comes from the fry in the stream, the young of the year, that are able to get down in the gravel and small springs and avoid the rotenone. "ft is extremely difficult to eradicate the total population." Currently there are only a small percent of streams in the area that contain Bonneville cutthroats. Most of the cutthroats caught by anglers are the Yellowstone Lake variety. The trout has been proposed for listing as an endangered species, but has not been approved yet. Several factors caused the decline of the fish, starting with the settlement of the valley. When pioneers arrived, they began to divert the rivers and streams for irrigation purposes, cutting off spawning runs for the fish. When the numbers of Bonnevilles began to drop, other fish were introduced into the streams to supplement the dwindling populations. The rain bows and subspecies of cutthroats i hred with the native fish, diminishing pure strains. And the brown and m-te- brook trout that were introduced the Bonneville tended to for food. And according to Bruce Schmidt of the DWB, the Bonneville is an easy trout to catch, and it was basically ignored. "We've come to find that even within a subspecies, each has its own unique characteristics," he said. "The Bear Lake cutthroat is a subspecies of the Bonneville that has adapted to large lakes. Bad we lost that fish, we would have lost a tremendous opportunity as far as lake fishing goes." The ones we'll put in Red Butte Creek are a stream-dwellinpopulation that' are well adapted to swifter waters, Schmidt said. "There is every reason to believe it will do as well and probably better than any of the stream trout in the area." g Don 'l Ride in Moving House Trailers By Sgt Ken Bryant Utah Highway Patrol Along with the summer months and the vacation season has come many phone calls from individuals who have just purl chased trailers They have fifth-whee- been told by someone who was told by someone else that it is permissible to have people the trailer while it is being towed on the highway. Well, contrary to the beliefs of some, the state still has a law on the books that makes it a traffic violation to have passengers in a trailer while it is being towed on the highway. The section states, "No person shall occupy a house trailer while it is being moved upon a public highway." I know you are saying that section specifies "house trailer." Well, under ride With a healthy, population in Red Butte Creek and no one to bother the fish Red Butte is closed to fishing the entire year, biologists would have a brood stock in which to draw from. Hopes are to eventually return the Bonneville to much of its original range. The plan currently calls for two, and possibly three, more treatments of the stream above Red Butte Reservoir before introducing the fifth-whe- trailers from the section. In my mind, safety becomes a very big factor when this issue arises. How safe would a passenger be in any trailer if the towing vehicle was involved in an accident? to exempt fifth-whe- Passengers in the trailer would not be secured. They would be free to bounce around the interior of the trailer and come in contact with who knows what. If you pack like I do, you put all the items, you are going to use when you get to where you are going in the trailer on the floor. Dutch ovens, folding chairs, bottles of pop, canned goods and so on. All of these items are free to travel at who knows how last and in who knows what direction. Of the accidents I have investigated which involved trailers, I would not want to have been a passenger in any of them because of the destruction that occurred. Felt's Photography n pure-strai- in definitions, "house trailer" means ta) A trailer or semi trailer which is designed, constructed and equipped as a dwelling place, living abode or sleeping place either permanently or temporarily and is equipped for use as a conveyance on streets and highways, or (b) A trailer or a semi trailer whose chassis and exterior shell is designed and constructed for use as a house trailer, as defined in paragraph (a), but which is used instead permanently or temporarily for the advertising, sales, display or promotion of merchandise or services, or for any other commercial p ipe e except the transportation of pi pt 'ty for hire or the transportation oi property for distribution by a private carrier. The big argument is in how much more stable a trailer seems to be than a conventional trailer.
