It was a very, very lush kind of a string sound Ormandy was also responsible for hiring the very best players he could get, so that we have really great depth all through the or- n It is generally accepted that the or chestra has improved since Muti took over, and Philadelphia audiences would seem to agree. He is a jazz player with impeccable taste. He is like a watercolorist the way he paints moods with his instrument. Coleman has always been the The interviews given by the two are worth reading as each gets into the hows and why of "Song X , However, even after reading the music sounds confusing then-views- Metheny in particular says that Colemans music is all about melody I'll be darned if I can hear any melody in any of the tunes. This album is for jazz freaks only who were raised on Sun Ra, John Coltrane and Ihar-oaSanders during their "Live In Seattle" period, or James Blood Ulmer. ZAWINUL, Dialects (Columbia) This album is almost as strange as the ColemanMetheny collaboration. As the driving force behind Weather Report, Zawinul has always brought intelligence, feeling and originality to electronic music. On his own here the Austrian musician seems to have plotted his course too well. Dialects" needs a h:nt of spontaneity. Zawinul describes his first solo album in 15 years as a "global celebration. It is his musical impressions of the many people and places he has encountered on his journeys. While the sounds he produces on his enormous collection of synthesizers are esoteric enough, they just dont flow. While the music is enticingly exotic on such songs as Zeebop, "Carnava- h Record review alto saxophonist of the jazz world. His free style, while unyieldingly individualistic, has convinced some people that his way out nuances are just plain noise. The two seem like strange bedfellows and the music they make here is avant-gard- e even stranger. Even Methenys breezy licks cannot keep "Song X" from going over the edge. Coleman sounds as agitated as ever. Beware! This is a strange brew that not even the likes of drummer Jack DeJoh-nett- e and bassist Charlie Haden can salvage. In the June issue of down beat magazine, Metheny and Coleman talk about their historic collaboration. lito and Waiting For The Rain," Zawinul remains a slave to technique. His considerable artistic powers need to be tempered by someone like Wayne Shorter. JOE COCKER, Cocker (Capitol) This English soul singer has ridden the roller coaster of fame and disaster for years. Muti has a high degree of respect lor composers wishes in respect to original score markings He has bmme a terror to singers, insisting they abandon showy ornamentation that has become standard With Beethoven's Symphony No 5. which the orchestra will perform in Symphony Hall, Muti observes Beethoven's tempo markings scrupulously, according to Carol "I think he probably follows the tempi markings that Beethoven used a little bit more accurately than the average conductor I think people who will be hearing, for instance, the first movement of the Beethoven Fifth, will probably think, 'My goodness, look how fast hes taking it,' but actually its the exact tempo marking that Beethoven himself put in the score." Carol refused to compare Orman-dy'- s and MutTs versions of the Beethoven Fifth. "Its funny how people always want to know Ormandy, Muti. It's the strangest Ormandy. Muti thing 1 just don't think its fair to compare performances of works by two different people "Were in the Muti era now Let me just tell you this, the musicians in the orchestra are terribly, terribly excited about playing with this man. They all respect his honest and thats really the best thing you could get. A marriage wears thin after a certain extended honeymoon period. But I dont think thats really happened here. While there is no clearcut hit on Cocker, the sum of the parts is pretty good. Cockers voice is clear and forceful. He sings with renewed spirit and conviction.
