Isn't the a's a clerk in a convenience Store And there are always thos taxpayers who feel a particular council member's service is actually worthless. The Murray City Council has decided to deal with this with an annual review of the salaries paid its elected officials. to be conducted by the citys Personnel Advisory Bard. an independent group ut city residents: While such a process is not immune from problems. it is a fairly common and effective method for these sorts of matters. Murray City Council members now receive a flat rate of $702 a month. regardless of the number of meetings they are required to attend. They recently tried to give themselves a pay raise. increasing their salary to $300 monthly, but retreated when public complaints argued paying such a high salary to a part-tim- e City Council want justified. If members of the Personnel Advisory Committee can be insulated from the political pressure of elected officials. they should be able to objectively determine whether elected city officials are paid too much. too little, or enough. Elected officials make many sacrifices to assure the efficient operation of their communities and deserve proper compensation for their time and efforts. An objective. annual salary review by an tndependent citizen group should assure that Murray taxpayers are being fair and equitable with their elected municipal leaders. tiahns Merit Scholarships Awarded to 13 By The Associated Press Merit National scholarships of $2.000 each have been awarded to 13 Utah high school students to further schooling in their chosen fields. officials say.
