Show FOOD The Salt Lake Tribune C3 December 11 1991 Wednesday — I There's 'lite' at end of grocery aisle tips for making light label choices Holiday snack foods need not be fattening By Judy J Fitzgibbons The first big weekend of "the holidays" is upon us so it seems timely to look at new snack foods you might consider keeping on hand Spread Kaukauna's new Light 50 Cheese Spread on Nabisco's new Mr Phipps Pretzel Chips and you'll be eating half as much fat as putting regular cheese spread Fat calories 27 Saturated fat 2 grams Cholesterol 15 milligrams Sodium 180 (SA) 190 milligrams Diabetic exchanges: 1 medium fat meat The banner on the bags of Nabisco's Mr Phipps Pretzel Chips announce they contain "No Cholesterol" and are "LOW FAT" We have three versions to pick from: Original Lightly Salted and Sesame The nutrition label for the Sesame shows each contributing 2 grams of fat while the other two have only a single gram I assume sprinkling sesame seeds on top of the basic chip raises the fat content a bit When we multiply the portion up to my "presize all three flavors meet my ferred" criteria of containing fewer than 5 grams of fat per serving The small amount of fat comes from vegetable shortening (soy oil) so I wouldn't expect there to be any cholesterol The chips' very high sodium and probable low fiber content reduced their ratings Even the Lightly Salted chips contribute 400 milligrams of sodium along with each 120 calories If you're used to eating less salt you'll probably find them very salty Spread an ounce of Kaukauna Lite 50 around on 16 Original Mr Phipps Chips and your little snack adds up to 810 milligrams of sodium!
