with her performance during the past year as president of the Utah Association of Realtors but she wouldn t necessarily jump at the chance to serve in the position again “I m delighted that I received the opportunity to serve as president of the association” she said ‘ but there are a lot of other Realtors out there who have just as much to contribute to the organization I think they should get their chances to serve as well ” Mrs Burnham was the first woman president m the history of the 67-ye- Utah Association of Realtors which represents the 13 real estate boards throughout the state She counts among the major accomplishments of the association during her tenure the construction and dedication of the organization’s new headquarters building at 5710 Green St in Murray and the defeat of a bill before the Utah Legislature which would have required the mandatory disclosure of sales information in real estate transactions “We worked very hard to get the bill defeated" she said “We strongly believed that real estate buyers and sellers have a right to keep information about their transactions confidential if they so desire ” As for the association’s new headquarters Mrs Burnham said she is delighted that the organization finally owns its own building “The association has always espoused the ownership of real estate and it nice because we can now say we own our own building and no longer have to lease space” she said A Utah native Mrs Burnham grew up on a small cattle ranch in Jensen a small agricultural community near Vernal It’s the last little city before you get to the Colorado border” she said However she eventually moved to Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School m 1955 Her first jobs were as an office and ‘ clerical staff worker In 1975 she was hired as a real estate secretary a job she said changed the direction of her life "I quickly realized then that what I really wanted to do was become an agent and get involved in real estate sales " she said "It offered the opportunity to grow and succeed in a you can really be of profession where ” help to people In fact she says that she likes the position of agent so much that she has not seriously considered opening her own brokerage even though she has acquired a broker’s license “I love the challenge of sales” she said "But I also know that the job of an agent is not for the Although it can be a very rewarding if a person is going to succeed as an agent he's not only going to have to have a desire for hard work but be as well " Mrs Burnham works as an agent selling residential properties out of Century 21 Grant Davis real estate office in Bountiful "I'm very thankful that Grant Davis has been so supportive of me in my work with the association My husband has been very supportive as well and ”it has made things a lot easier for me Her work with the association has included serving in the positions of treasurer vice president and preside- hit a slump Mortgage rates have been going up and I always feel bad when that happens because many people interested in becoming first time home buyers won t be able to qualify to buy their first home” she said She advises buyers who do qualify for a home not to wait for interest rates to decline "Interest rates do seem to by cyclical but I advise potential home buyers who qualify not to wait The market certainly isn t go" ing to wait for them Mrs Burnham indicated too that the market for real estate in many areas of the state particularly those areas not located along the Wasatch Front has been depressed for some time “Parts of our state are really suffering economically" she said Although the current president elect of Utah Association of Realtors is scheduled to take the office of president at the associations annual convention that will be held this week in St George Mrs Burnham said even though she is stepping down it will not be the end of her involvement with the organization "Once I step down as president I still intend to serve as the chairman of the associations’s Political Affairs Committee” she said nt-elect Thanks a Million faint-hearte- d The mother of
