out because buyers purchased more than 60 million new cars and light trucks between 1983 and 1986 Mary Ann Keller an analyst with the brokerage firm Furman Selz Mager Dietz & Bir-ne- y Inc told a luncheon at the Women's Economic Club that 1987 "is going to be looked at $s kind of a boring year" for the industry She said most vehicle buyers hold four- - or five-yefinance contracts on their cars which means they they still have a long time to pay off the loans Asa result sales this year will be lower than in 1986 Keller said carmakers themselves created e the lull by heavily promoting buyer incentives last year Federal tax reform also pulled sales ahead as buyers were advised to purchase new vehicles before the end of 1986 to take full advantage of sales tax and interest rate deductions car sales this year will probably edge just above 10 million units about 11 percent below last year's levels She predicted that Keller said that incentives will continue to be offered by most carmakers because more than 30 companies will be competing in a cut-rat- smaller market Domestic automakers are not the only ones to feel the slowdown she said “For the first time in many years the for The industry analyst also predicted that eign manufacturers are participating in this d decline and overall it looks like import sales competition in the car market will might be down around 10 percent in 1987" she intensify and that Japanese carmakers could said try to build cars for the U S market in eastern Europe to keep their costs down “There is a possibility of the Japanese in"I think 1987 will be an important year in that the Japanese carmakers will not sell 23 vesting in eastern Europe and bringing cars million cars which is their allocation” Keller here from Poland Motor Division debuted its sharp new "all world" subcompact in the Salt Lake area this week the LeMans during a promotion at the Airport Hilton Hotel If the name sounds familiar you're right Twenty years ago the LeMans and the Tempest werelittle brothers to the more popular GTO muscle machine LeMans made its last appearance in 1981 according to Joe Hendrick regional sales manager for Pontiac He said the name was selected because of its recognition factor Unlike the all American-mad‘64 LeMans of 20 years ago the new LeMans is truely an international product It is based on the Opel Kadett designed by General Motors' West German subsidiary that was named Car of the Year in 1985 and built by Daewoo Motors Co of Sou th Korea in which GM owns an equity interest and shipped to ports in Tacoma and Long Beach for Pontiac dealers to sell The LeMans is a subcompact that meaand weighs in at 2400 pounds It has a very European look with a flush front-en- d treatment that stamps it as a Pontiac LeMans is offered in two-dor notchback hatchback and versions and in base and SE (sedan only) body styles The base hatchback starts at $5999 the base sedan at $7925 The fully equipped SE sedan provided by Mark Miller Pontiac which I tested cost at $8399 One of the first things you notice about this car is the amount of room it has inside It has sufficient legroom and headroom for four average adults even in the back although a long trip would strain somebody's patience The seats in the SE model ofbucket seats with fered sport-styl- e height adjusters as well as recline postions The trunk has 15 cubic feet amazing for a car this size and can be accessed by folding the rear seats down The instrument panel has illuminated round-dirally instrumentation including speedometer and tachometer There's also a trip odometer fuel and temperature gauges It is one of the bigger compacts The hatchback is built on a wheelbase and is 1637 inches long The sedan is 1718 inches The longer wheelbase moves occupants farther from the wheels and reduces the road harshness typical in mini-car- s During a test drive the ride was surprisingly smooth for a small car sures e Richins Nissan
