Show 2NV The Salt Lake Tribune 18 1987 Wednesday February 2 Frees Find They Share More Than Just a Name cry once in a while u story comes along that is so wonderfully bizarre I wait to sit down at my computer in the office and get It down on microchip The other day such a story came along I met Kathy Free i Kathv Free is a Mormon homemaker with six kids who llvea in a onm house on Hidden Valley Boulevard in Sandy I d always figured llioi e must lie another Cathy or Kathy Free out there because in the past couple of years at least la people have asked me if I am a Mormon homemaker with six kids who lives in a house on Midden Valley Boulevard m Sand v People who ask such questions don't know me very well I urn not the type although I must confess it would be nice to live in a Ev cun I five-Ited- Mormon-homemak- house live in a cramped apartment the Avenues with two cats who interrupt my life whenever they feel like it I don’t need six kids I don't know my way around Sandy In my mind everything past 1300 South is Sandy I like to hang around downtown So you can imagine how surprised I was eight years ago when I was first asked if I was moonlighting as a housewife somewhere south of I By Cathy Free (oo South At first I just laughed it off like it was some kind of joke but as the years went on and the questions increased I put Free and Free together and realized there must be somebody out there sharing my name It wasn't an easy discovery to deal with Free is an onginul name I’ve always thought It's one of a kind it's w Inimical it's unusual it's slightly unbelievable It’s well it’s free There are over (1700 Andersons listed in the Salt Lake City telephone directory but there are only nine Frees Free is so free that a lot of people think my last name is really something like Kirtzengurgler or Ziegenburpler People think I made the Free part up because ZiegenburplcrStyle won’t fit on my column masthead All these years I've been proud of the fact that I was really born a Free and now along comes another Free named Kathy The fact that she is Kathy with a “K" and I am Cathy with a “C” seems to make little difference A lot of people btill think that Cathy Free is a housewife with a clean house and six kids in Sandy and Kathy Free is a newspaper columnist who lives with two cats and always has dirty dishes in her sink I decided I'd better arrange to meet Kathy Free and clear up the whole Free fiasco before her reputation is ruined I started at the top of the Free list in the phone book and freehandedly dialed each Free to see if Kathy was home On the fifth Free I was home free Just a minute" said one of the six Free kids dropping the phone on the floor "Mommmmm! Telephone!" (That’s something Cathy with a "C" doesn't plan to hear) Kathy with a ‘‘K’’ picked the phone up off the floor and said ‘‘Hello" Kathy Free? This is Cathy Free" I said “A lot of people seem to think I am you Does anybody think you are me?" It sounded a bit confusing but Kathy Free understood perfectly Cathy Free' I've been tempted to call you! Kathy laughed freely "Of course I'm Free Cm always Free I'll see you next Monday Two o'clock sharp" The following week I made my yearly trek to Sandy and searched for Hidden Valley Boulevard Whoever named the street did a good job Finally after cruising through suburbia for 20 minutes I found the street and residence No 11516 — a large brown and beige house with skateboards and basketballs in the front yard I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I rang the front doorbell — I couldn't help but wonder if Kathy with a "K" looked anything like me She didn't Kathy Free was thinner Tome on in!” she Brigham City is actually a series of fault segments that could produce earthquakes independently of other segments Mr Nelson said Unlike California's San Andreas Fault the Wasatch Fault does not creep "Unfortunately the Wasatch Fault does not creep and the strain is accumulating'' Mr Nelson said What we see in the trenches is that there are breaks and then nothing so it all builds up to a critical point " When that critical point is reached scientists expect a characteristic" earthquake with a magnitude of over 7 on the Richter Scale An estimated 2200 people could die and more than 10 000 sull'er injury in such u e earthquake Mr Nelson said a 1900 sludv estimates a charac "We are right in the window of vulnerability for the next earthquake ” said Salt Lake County Geologist Craig V Nelson An estimated 2200 people could die and more than 10000 could suffer injuries A 1980 study estimates that a characteristic earthquake would cause $12 billion in damages teristic earthquake wmuld cause $1 2 billion worth of damage An earthquake along the Wasatch Front would produce different kinds of seismic hazards Mr Nelson said One hazard is fault rupture Trenching studies indicate earthquakes in the Salt Lake segment cause 6 feet of displacement A second hazard is ground shaking ‘That tends to get worse as you get into the valley" Mr Nelson said "it's a function of the types of sediment" Soil characteristics may amplify earthquake vibrations causing greater damage Ground shaking causes another hazard known as iiquifaetion when sandy wet and loose soils act like liquid Areas on bedrock near the fault line are less vulnerable to this phenomenon than the valley artable Mr Nelson r eas with said During Iiquifaetion buildings tend to roll over and light buried objects such as septic tanks rise and rupture "It's the old bowl of jello effect" he said low-lyin- g high-wate- Finally ground shaking causes landslides and slope failures on otherwise stable areas he said The "red flag" maps Mr Nelson is working on will outline areas particularly subject to those geological hazards so residents and developers can make informed decisions before they buy or build Mr Nelson also dispenses practical advice in the event of earthquake as part of the earthquake hazard reduction program Salt Lake County plan Libraries Offer Free Help With Taxes The Salt Lake County Library System down their water heaters to prevent it from tipping over during an earthquake That could cause a gas line to break and increase fire hazard he said Other actions to take before during and after the earthquake: — Secure fixtures such as lights cabinets and objects Remove heavy or hazardous objects from above sleeping areas — Store bottled goods china and oilier breakables in low or closed
