Pretty good according to six of the editors responsible for delivering the news on a daily and monthly basis The discussion was held Tuesday night at the University of Utah’s Marriott Library Auditorium and sponsored by Friends of the University of Utah Library About 50 people turned out for “A Perspective on Today’s News Reporting: How Accountable? How Responsible? How Ethical?” The panel discussion moderated by Dr Milton Hollstein professor of communications and The Media Monitor for the Deseret News involved John Edwards news director of KTVX Will Fehr executive editor of The Salt Lake Tribune Ernest Ford managing editor and director of the Probe 5 investigative unit for KSL Bill Lord managing editor and assistant news director for KUTV William B Smart senior editor for the Deseret News and Paul Swenson editor and founder of Utah Holiday magazine Included in the discussion were taste responsibility protecting the public from offensive material the The editors agreed their decisions not easy and they don’t always make the right ones Mr Ford said footage of the carnage following the midair collision of two planes presented a dilemma of what to show “In television we take pictures of all are this stuff” He said it became a big issue in his newsroom and what the reaction of the viewers would be “At what point do you sanitize the viewer?” Mr Ford asked At what point do you hold back and when does it cross the line when you’re not telling the truth?” “It’s up to the conscience of the editor of the newspaper” Mr Fehr said noting the best way to produce a quality product is to hire decent people “Seldom do we find an issue where it is right or wrong” Mr Lord said It’s difficult to cover and there is no right answer” Two Ogdenites Jailed Charged With Kidnapping 19-Year-- OGDEN (AP) — Two Ogden men have been charged with aggravated kidnapping and booked into Weber County Jail in the alleged gunpoint man abduction of a Jesse T Grissinger 18 and Eddie Lovell Watkins 21 were arraigned Tuesday in 3rd Circuit Court where each was ordered held on a $10000 bond No preliminary hearing was set Police said Louis R Armbruster and another man allegedly armed with a knife arrived at the home of Richard Sheppard at 9:30 pm Monday According to Sheppard Armbruster a friend of his said the man and another man with a gun were waiting in a car outside Armbruster asked to borrow $300 to pay off a debt to the men who allegedly were threatening to kill him Sheppard said he pretended to call for the money but instead notified Old police However Armbruster and the two men left a few minutes later authorities said At 10:30 the men called Sheppard and demanded the money and Sheppard suggested that they meet him at a supermarket The men refused and Sheppard hung up said Ogden Detective John Stubbs Sheppard told police that one of Arnbruster’s captors called back later and told him to leave the money in an envelope on the sidewalk in front of the US Forest Service regional headquarters office Stubbs said he spotted a vehicle matching one described by Sheppard in the parking lot of a nearby apartment building The detective said he followed it and Grissinger and Watkins were arrested when they stopped Armbruster had escaped unhurt out a back window of a residence where he was being held police said Study Reveals Potential Geologic Hazards at Thistle By The Associated Press A proposed dam on the site of a massive mudslide that inundated the tiny central Utah mountain hamlet of Thistle and destroyed nearby rail lines and a highway in 1983 may be plagued by geologic hazards a government study says In the report Irving J Witkind a US Geological Survey scientist in Denver said Spanish Fork Canyon may contain both a fault and a geologic structure called the “Thistle Creek diaspiric fold” The fold may have been formed in the distant geologic past when an un- derground mudstone formation thrust upward causing the arching of an overlying plate and its sedimentary cover he said “Additional field investigations should be completed to determine the existence of these hazards prior to any final decision about a new dam” Witkind recommended in his report In April 1983 a mountain of mud and rock cut off the Spanish Fork River twisted canyon rail lines and destroyed a section of US 6 Backed lake up water formed a that covered Thistle The lake has since been drained and the earthen dam left by the slide improved with a diversion tunnel Utah County Commission Chairman Brent Morris said the report’s findings would definitely affect planning for a dam at Spanish Fork Canyon but he said it would not have an immediate impact “The county just doesn’t have the money to proceed with anything right now” he said Tuesday “But the findings would have to be taken into consideration along with our own engineering study at the point in time we do find money to go forward” The $300000 study conducted by James M Montgomery Engineers of Salt Lake City contained recommendations ranging from relatively simple and inexpensive improvements to Physician Lauds Courage of Organ Recipient SMITHFIELD Cache County (AP) — The recipient of the first combined heart-luntransplant in Utah is described by her family physician and employer as “a courageous woman who is very dedicated to her nursing profession” Karen Greene was in critical but stable condition Tuesday at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center where the dual organ operation was performed Sunday night Dr Edwin C Budge said the Smithfield woman had been working for him part time until almost up to the time of the surgery “Everyone loved her in the office and admired the way she continued to care for her family and participate in society” he said “That was in spite of a congenital heart problem that had been creating severe blood pressure in her lungs” She is married to Jay Greene head cashier at Utah State University’s acand is the counting department mother of children ages 6 and 10 Budge said he was told the patient's father Owen Shupe earlier Tuesday that she was doing as well as can be expected and “we are all optimistic” During the past months Greene prepared for the operation several times but each time the surgery was delayed until a better organ match could be found Budge said “Karen is extremely fortunate to live in an era where this is possible and I think she is going to be fine It is remarkable that we have progressed to the point where people are capable of doing this kind of work and I fully expect to see more and more of it done” he said that while the potential geologic hazards at slide site complicated planning they did not “necessarily preclude the construction of a safe and stable dam that would impound a other extensive water project In Spanish Fork Canyon he said it will be some time before local and state government officials can go ahead with any proposals “For one thing jurisdiction is a question" Morris said “If the state has original jurisdiction then we hope they’ll come up with some money to provide a permanent solution” Jurisdiction is the focal point of current negotiations with the state Division of Water Resources concerning any possible state appropriation for the Thistle slide area he said In his report Witkind said trying to address a major issue” Arnold said Family violence exists as much in Utah Valley as anyplace Arnold said even though many try to ignore it The conference is designed for those in medicine and mental health clergymen and for those interested in learning more about what resources are available in Utah Valley to help those in family violence situations “Anyone should be able to find sessions that would be personally helpful” Arnold said She remembers a woman who came up to her after the first conference who said she almost didn’t come because her church leader didn’t think she needed to take the time to learn about a problem that didn't exist in her area “After the conference she thanked me for the valuable information she had received and said that she had already identified some problems” Arnold added “The denial of family violence occurring in our area represents a great myth I’ve even read some preliminary material that indicates family violence in Utah may even exceed the national average But unfortunately I encounter many people who think if they can’t see a problem then it doesn't exist “That denial is dangerous because the wrong attitudes in a community may hinder those who need help from seeking it” The conference represents a joint effort by United Way of Utah County The Social Work Marriage and Family Therapy and Fducational Psychology Departments at BYU and various agencies and citizens in Utah County He noted that the Crystal Springs causeway dam was Calif earth-fille- d built across the San Andreas Fault but has retained its integrity While Witkind said he personally doubted the existence of a “Thistle reCanyon fault” he noted that other c searchers did not and it and the fold were worth further study dia-piri- Shocking Results of AM A Teen Survey
