Show 2T The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday January 10 1988 Nostalgic days at the Coronado across from San Diego Continued from T-- l dents beginning with Benjamin Harrison in April of 1891 and most recently hosting President Reagan durconference ing a 1982 But the most famous state visit and the one which adds such a sense of romance to the Del’s illustrious past occurred in 1920 when His Royal Highness Prince Edward of Wales arrived Romantics love to speculate that the Del was where the Prince first met Wallis Warfield Spencer the woman for whom he later abdicated the English throne to marry At the time she was married to the commanding officer of the Coronado Naval Air Station and likely met the Prince in the receiving line of the ball given in his honor — 15 years prior to the “official” introduction in London The hotel’s Hall of History displays a faded newspaper photograph of the Prince taken during the state dinner seated next to the daughter-in-laof the hotel’s owner who reported “He was mainly interested in Hollywood and the stars” The stars continue to come to the mini-summ- it Del to relax and enjoy the resort’s facilities adding to the Del’s historic mystique But this year when you run into someone famous it might take a few moments to determine if you’re in the present or reliving the Del Coronado’s past RESOURCES: As the largest beachfront resort on the North American Pacific Coast the Del has 7 lighted clay tennis courts an Olympic size swimming pool and golf course The hotel makes an excellent base for exploring the sites of San Diego — Wild Animal Park Sea World Balboa Park — or taking a Trolley ride to Tijuana Mexico for the day For more information contact Hotel Del Coronado 1500 Orange Avenue Coronado CA 92118 for or (619) (619) full-servi- 435-661- Ms du Pont Luxury hotel marks 75th by Tom Troy UPI Writer WILMINGTON Del — Ask a Delawarean to define luxury and your most likely response if it isn't two weeks in the Bahamas will be The Hotel du Pont The grand old dame of Italian marble and renowned dining rooms observes its 75th anniversary in January all of it under the patronage of a single owner the Wilmington-base- d chemical giant the Du Pont Co “It's a real rarity to stay under continuous ownership and satisfy the same customer business for 75 years” said hotel manager Ferdinand Wieland “I don’t know if you could find 10 in the United States that fall into this category” The hotel was established in the days when Wilmington was not much r seaport in njo re than a the shadow of Philadelphia looming large 30 miles up the road The du Ponts anxious to have a luxury hotel from which to show off their expanding empire built the I&tel du Pont for $1 million after Pierre S du Pont president of what was then the Du Pont Powder Co decided Wilmington was a little too provincial for his customers The hotel opened on Jan 15 1913 to a glittering reception ‘This hotel was envisioned and built as a Wilmington landmark The cohceivers recognized that if Du Pont was going to be a global player and Wilmington was going to be economically significant then you need a first-clas- s hotel” Wieland said "This hotel has never changed ownership and has never been regarded e as a venture” About 40 percent of the hotel's business is Du Pont Ninety percent of its weekday trade are business customers But the manager says the hotel tries to be more than just a company hotel in a company town As a social and political hub the hotel reigns surpreme especially with Republicans in the governor’s office the last decade The hotel’s ljrge Gold Ballroom has been the scene of numerous important politidebates and cal announcements speeches over the years It was at the ijotel du Pont under ornate Italian plaster festooned with blue and white balloons and streamers that former governor Pierre du Pont IV of the founder announced his candidacy for the presidency last year The hotel’s Green Room with its continental cuisine is considered the best dining spot in Delaware The romantic air of the old hotel also makes it a favored spot for weddings proms and cotillions blue-colla- -- real-estat- The hotel is also the spot where stockholders of the Du Pont Co meet to count their profits each year “It has that cachet that exlusivity that no other place has in Delaware” said Lise Monty editor of Delaware Today Magazine “There is nothing else that can compare with it Other places are elegant but this has the old elegance” The old elegance has also given bloom to new features that appeal to those seeking the luxuriously modbeds deep pile ern The four-pos- t carpet and dark wood furniture exmovies and ist alongside For extra fees you can get shoes shined continental breakfast and turn-dowservice at night The hotel courts the weekend getaway crowd with a package that includes two nights $80 off meals and a performance in the hotel Play house for $240 Physically the hotel occupies the highest perch in downtown Wilmingbuildton and shares its block-sizeing with the Du Pont Co The interior architecture was described at its 1913 grand opening as “embracing all that money and ingenuity have yet devised” “This hotel is probably an architectural classic” said Wieland “The ballroom was created by 30 Italian artisans who worked three years to hand carve motifs in the wall Since it was opened in 1918 the year of (women’s) suffrage the famous women of the world are recognized is The majestic Hotel Del Coronado built in 1887 is now a state historic landmark celebrating its centennial in February n Money talks Shanghai looks again to capitalism by Vincent Randazzo d there” A low spot in the hotel’s history — one that Wieland doesn't like to In dwell on — was the that sad era the hotel covered the ornate marble in the lobby with Formica and painted over handsome inlaid wooden doors They were recently restored to their original condition Wieland an Austrian with elegant manners that complement the distinct European flavor of the hotel said the hotel works hard to preserve its position against the competition of large hotel chains Stable management is one key element Wieland is only the seventh manager in 75 years Impeccable service is another “Basically it’s nothing big you do” Wieland said “It’s the little things that count like (when the waitress is pouring coffee) positioning the napkin in such a way that you could never spill coffee on the customer” The hotel plans to observe its 75th anniversary in January with a “gala ball” at which 300 guests in period costume will sit down to the same dinner served when the hotel opened its doors on Jan 15 1913 mid-195- WHERE IN THE Newhouse News Service SHANGHAI China — Opium dens prostitutes corruption and the possibility of
