with arthritic have predictably relocated to the warm stable climates of Arizona and Florida seeking relief from their symptoms j But Dr Joseph L Hollander the phvsician who first proved climate has an effect on arthritis pain is nou suggesting the stress of a move to warmfr latitudes may do more harm than good for some patients Hollander emeritus professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine cited a recent survey of 700 people with arthritis who had moved to Tucson Ariz because they believed the warm dry weather would alleviate joint pain and swelling Half of those surveyed said their symptoms had Improved since relocating but a full third found their symptoms had become more severe according to Hollander s report in AimPtus an arthritis magazine The findings support recent research stress as well as weather may play a significant role in arthritis pain The point I want to make is that people Homust not think a move is a cure-al- l llander said in a telephone interview Moving is considered one of the most stressful of life s events next to death of a loved one and divorce and so relocating for arthritis pain may contribute to the problem more than relieve it The National Arthritis Foundation has no figures indicating how many of the country s estimated 37 million arthritis sufferers hae moved to warmer climates according to spokeswoman Sue Manfred "Anecdotally it would seem there are a lot" she said Manfred said ihetoundation recommends that people who are interested in moving vis -- Plastic Hearts Ear Implants Chemists Developing Artificial Vessels Recent studies at the University of Pittsburgh showed that a test group of Jarvik-- 7 artificial heart recipients fared poorly because of infections and severe clotting associated with the mechanical pump The human body does not reject an artificial material as it would a transplanted human organ but instead develops clots at the point of connection between the body and the artificial material The clots then enter ihe circulatory system Wrobleski hopes to sidestep the clotting problem by altering the surfaces of plastics in ways that would reduce chances of blood adversely reacting with the artificial material Los Alamos scientists are experimenting with a process called chemical infusion to modify the surface of plastics while not changing the material's basic properties of flexibility and strength Wrobleski says the chemical process involves placing the plastic in a solution that softens the outside while different chemicals are infused" into the structure of the surface rendering it adaptable to biological systems "The initial results show that the technique of treating the surfaces is promising but we still need to do a We want to lot of work" she said try different infusant materials to test their effectiveness ” The chemist and her team hope to eventually develop a computerized catalog of specially developed plastic vessels permitting dolors to shop for those that meet specific medical needs LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Chemists are attempting to modify the surface of certain plastics with the hope of developing advanced“bionic" mate- rials that ultimately can be used as implantable blood vessels Experiments under way at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico join a growing repertoire of potential uses of plastic to replace malfunctioning physiological systems Recent developments include plastic hearts ventricles an artificial kiiee and portions of inner ear implants that electronically zap sound impulses to the ear s cochlea the snjall coiled bone of the inner ear which then transmits them to the auditory nerve and on to the brain The new work with artificial blood vessels could have applications for bdart bypass surgery patients if scientists can figure out bow to make plastics adaptable to the complex circulatory system The benefit of having artificial bipod vessels immediately available inlemergencies is obvious" said Los Alamos chemist Diane Wrobleski but she also acknowledges that "ifnaU synthetic vessels that do not clhse or cause the blood to dot” are still several years down the road Wrobleski and her team face the same formidable challenges that l have plagued manufacturers of hearts: when blood comes in contact with any artificial surface it tends to clot a critical condition that hu-mj- m son" Hollander contends this monumental change could worsen arthritis symptoms and suggests patients considering a move to a warmer climate ask themselves first w hether they would worry excessively about the move and how much it costs whether they would be lonely in their new home and whether their decision would be supported by family and friends "Stress can aggravate the pain" he said If they are giving up family and friends if cm block circulatory pathways Girding against the obstructions is important because clots can lead to heart attacks and strokes surrounds joints This membrane Rheumatoid arthritis occurs three times as often in women as men and its onset usually occurs between the ages 18 and 50 Warm stable climates such as those found in the Southwest alleviate some pain and"' ' swelling since there is little humidity and the V! ' barometer remains fairly constant According to Hollander arthritis patients who find a move to the Southwest too stres-fu- l can still alleviate their symptoms by using a dehunudifier or an air conditioner to keep humidity in 30 to 40 percent range that ideal for most patients The doctor also recommended that arthri-i- r tis patients monitor weather forecasts and take arthritis drugs or asr pirin before a major storm to keep pain at a j minimum Such therapy should be approved by the patient s physician he said called the svnovial mem- brane becomes inflamed and increases in surrounding mobilitv ‘ fluid e use pain and reduced DON’T LITTER The Western Institute of Neuropsychiatry is pleased to Announce Puppies and kittens can be beautiful They also can be unwanted Statistics show that we have far too many stray dog3 and cats already Some are planned for many are not They end up homeless abandoned or at the pound We offer low cost spays and overneuters to help this nation-widpopulation of dogs and cats and our k 1 e on-du- ty T veterinarian will gladly give you all the details Spayed and neutered animals live longer and are happier and healthier too For low cost spays and neuters call us today The homeless dogs and cats are hoping that you will And we do too because at Ad Pet Complex We Cere For Pets And People f U4 causer peU Brent Petersen MD TWO CONVENIENT The Western Institute of Neuropsychiatry is pleased to announce that Brent Petersen MD specializing in the treatment of adolescents mood disorders and depression has joined their staff and will be seeing patients at the Institute — 501 Chipeta Way Salt Lake City Pick Up the Phone We Can Help The Western ‘ arti-filia- they are giving up everything that is familiar then they should not expect too much good to come out of a move “ Skeletal remains suggest Neanderthals and even dinosaurs suffered from arthritis — a general term for pain and degeneration of the joints Throughout recorded history arthritis sufferers have contended they can tell when the weather is going to change by monitoring pain in their joints In the late 1960s Hollander and his colleagues gave scientific credibility to these reports when they found that rapid changes in weather — a sharp drop in barometric pressure combined with a rise in humidity — actually increase swelling and pain in many patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis a chronic disease involving a membrane that it their proposed new home several times over the course of a year to determine if they benefit from all seasons Even the most stable climates change somewhat" she said “And some people don't seem to feel better no matter how good the climate is ‘We suggest people put a lot of thought into this she said ‘Its a monumental change especially in the life of an older per- 583-250- Institute of Neuropsychiatry 0 PI A I foetal A - SLC 501 Chipeta Way I 'tah usdpeeylt! 1 SALT LAKE AREA LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU Alta Plaza Shopping Center Taylor's Landing Shopping Center 57 966-470- 0 2530 W 4700 S SIC 215 at 47th South (Exit 15) Open 7 Days MON-SA1 fui: s bs o o vevmry Sendees T 7:30-9:0- 0 s 700 E 9860 (Take Exit 90th SUN 12004 q-Is- tow Cos opening Z- - fa?00" 0$ b 'J fa Suppm food i rf &ootrig PA Co A f WJ DON’T LITTER SPECIAL!
