Bayard died at yesterday afternoon at Karlstein the summer residence o ohis of his daughter Mrs Samuel D. D Warren after an illness of six weeks His llis death was without pain li His llis s wife his two daughters daughters Mrs Mrs Warren Warre n and Miss Florence Bayard and Bayard-and and his so son n nt Thomas F. F Bayard was elected its first lieutenant On June 30 1860 the tha famous peace meeting of citizens was held at Dover and Lieutenant Bayard was one of the principal speakers He denounced the war and his remarks on that occasion have bave been quoted in later years as an au argument against his acceptability asa as asa asa a presidential candidate In 1868 Mr Bayard was elected to succeed his father in the United States States' senate and was subsequently twice re- re elected In October 1856 Senator Bayard was married to Louisa daughter of Joseph JosephLee Lee a a. Baltimore banker Twelve children were the result of the union In 1877 he received the honorary degree degree degree de de- gree of LL D. D from Harvard college Mr Bayard was twice a candidate for the presidential nomination before the Democratic convention both times receiving a strong vote Mr Bayard served as secretary of state under President Cleveland's ad ad- ministration At the close of Mr Cleveland's administration Mr Bayard returned to private life and to his legal leg profession In March 1893 Mr Bayard was appointed appointed ap ap- pointed ambassador to the court o of St. St James and served during Mr Cleveland's Cleveland's Cleve Cleve- lands land's second term Mr Bayards Bayard's first wife died in the first year of his term as secretary of state Four years later he was married married mar mar- ried to Miss Mary W.
