Show Beethovens Fifth caps concert A searing went amiss with the heating system was music director Friday night Joseph Silverstein's searing interpretation of the Beethoven Fifth This rendition featured a bright, bold orchestral sound, stark dynamic contrasts, brisk, driving tempos and taut phrasing Yet the second movement also managed to sing, if any movement in this work can be said to sing The final movement was particularly fiery, and didnt lose momentum in spite of the fact that Mr. Silverstein opted for a repeat which is often omitted On the whole the orchestra played splendidly and on this occasion sounded closer to a virtuoso symphonic instrument than at any other time in recent memory. Some cracked horn calls took a little of the shine off the performance, but otherwise this was a convincing example By Paul Wetzel Tribune Staff Writer The Utah Symphony resumed its Symphony Hall subscription series Friday night after a month's hiatus, and it ,!id so with one of the most attractive programs of the season It also was one of the most conservative. (So call me a reactionary ) It opened with Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, continued with the Mozart Piano Concerto in D minor, K. 466, Concert review (Malcolm Frager, soloist), and concluded with the Beethoven Fifth Symphony. The only thing hotter than the tem- perature inside the hall something powerful interpretive concept brill.antly executed The concert opened with a work of much different temperament, the almost pastoral "Siegfried Idyll," and Mr Silversteins approach could hardly have offered a greater contrast to his view of the Beethoven The opening phrases of the work were very persuasive, featuring, as they did, a light, clear string sound, relaxed tempos and broad, nmantie phrasing One also became aware of excellent textural clarity and balance. But as the performance continued to unfold, the music relaxed to the point of becoming limp and a bit tiresome Though this rendition offered some lovely moments, the pieces more dramatic sections, un- Muiit ni nit I A GREAT MOVIE Roger derstated though they should be. failed to make a strong impression This was not the case with the Mozart, however Mr Silverstein and the orchestra gave the agitated opening section of the concerto the kind of kinetic energy it requires, and the interpretation was highlighted by some interesting details, particularly the crisp string articulation given to certain phrases. In fact, there was more of interest in the orchestral playing of the first movement than there was in that of the soloist, whose performance contained a few intriguing nuances but otherwise was rather unremarkable At times the soloists playing even seemed a little off balance, particularly where rhythm was concerned of a Ik M lltNil pst lit lltl Mlltli Ill's i I. till).
