Women professionals often fail to realize they are changing roles when they leave school and enter the workplace Being a female is only one of those roles that bring change, she Bill Daines said he has not received the preliminary report from the examiners office which will determine the actual state medical cause of death. Special to The Tribune RICHFIELD Wayne LeBaron, the health director for the Central Utah District Health Department, has written a book on preventive substances and therapies available to combat radiation sickness. The Richfield resident decided to write the book when a discussion Island centered on the Three-Mil- e - nuclear power plant accident brought up problems which have to be faced in case of nuclear war or a nuclear accident. The book, The Reluctant Survivors: A Family Guide to the Prevention and Treatment of Radiation Sickness, is written in everyday language in an effort to remove the mystery and fear of radiation sickness, Mr. LeBaron said. Mr. LeBaron said he has compiled protective substances which can prevent the damaging effects of ionizing radiation. In the book, he points out there is a limit to what any person can stand, with or without shielding or protective substances. There are emergency methods not for treating radiation sickness the most effective, but very effecat the family level, Mr. tively LeBaron said. "Having read many books and studied a great deal about radiation and its effects on humans, I have attempted to provide some hope for the survivors of such a holocaust, should it occur, he said. Between 1978 and 1980, $1 2 million in improvements were made at the airport, including the acquisition of 64 acres of land to extend the runway by 2,200 feet. A country road was relocated around the extended runway, and other improvements were made. Officials from FAA informed city leaders that money is available again this year, according to Mayor Sue Mane Young, and because Richfield's airport is on the state priority list for continued improvements, the state was also interested in funding the project. A feasibility study by Jones and DeMille Engineers of Richfield showed that 3,400 feet of the original 4,200 runway should be replaced, and the runway will eventually be 5,400 feet long, with an 800 foot overrun. "There is extensive deterioration of the old runway and most of the problems are caused by the high water table there," Mr. Farnsworth said. 5995. 136 45 per month g An underground water drainage system would be provided, much like the one built recently at the industrial park. This system would drain the runway underground. A new overlay would be placed over the taxi-wa- y and ramp, and some surface drainage work, along with a sewer and water system, would be added Fire hydrants would also be installed Richfields cost of the project would be about $32,000 undrr the present plan, Mr Farnsworth said He said the city council has budgeted $16,000 for the 1984-8year, and a similar amount for the next year to take care of the project if the gi ants are awarded. n 13 NO MONEY DOWN VOLKSWAGEN INTERMOUNTAIN GAS AS LOW AS grant which would pay for 90 percent of foot-lon- 5614 1 Baron said. The book is priced at 45.95 and is available in bookstores throughout Utah. Mr. LeBaron is a member of the Utah Radiation Technical Committee. He resided in Southern Utah during the period of open air testing of nuclear weapons and visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in the 1950s, while serving in the Army. Prior to his post in the health department, he was employed as a health physicist at the National Reactor Testing Station and worked m the materials testing reactor, engineering test reactor, sustained power excursion reactor and a chemical plant at the site. Mr. LeBaron emphasized that his book is not a survival" book about fallout shelters and food supplies, but rather a medical guide for families during or after a nuclear incident, and when little or no medical or professional help is available. Actually, it addresses the question, What if I survive? he said I firmly believe that radiation sickness can come in a variety of degrees and manifest many symptoms, but it does not have to be fatal if proper precautions are taken.
