Show 6W The Salt Late Tribune Sunday, October 23, 13 Colored layers with paint and embroidery on fabric with a design entitled Home Is Where the Heart Is, featuring a country cottage nestled in layer upon layer of flowering bushes By Erica Wilson "She wrought all dag mth her nydle 'til the very pain made her give over The colored threads made the work seem less tedious " ... So said Mary Queen of If" 1 V 1 Scots when asked I how she passed 1 her time 1 When 1 fall is said and done' one of the MTwilson most fascinating things in needlework is playing with color. Even computers can never run out of the myriads of combinations that are possible No wonder were so excited by the combination of wonderful fabrics that are possible with quiltmaking All the way from the beautiful rich colors to Amish the fresh calico prints of the '30s and the Victorian silks and velvets can give us inspiration for todays decoration. In days of yore, ladies when dying their homemade fabrics had to rely on colors from nature yellows from peach and pear trees, subdued browns from roots and tree barks. One of the most popular shades was indigo from the indigo plant leaf. When the colonial housewife discovered that her indigo turned out darker and clearer if she used a dye pot made of iron, she often added nails and iron fillings from the blacksmiths shop to her kettle to make sure she would end up with a true blue. Nothing Decorative The Amish were forbidden by their religion to embellish their houses or themselves with anything purely decorative. They were permitted, however, to sew a quilt in glowing colors since their bedding ' 11 tone-on-to- Home Is Where the Heart Is combines painting, stitching. was made in the name of thrift and practicality; surely the devil could not lead an industrious stitcher astray' Ironically, the Amish quilts displayed some of the boldest and most dazzling abstract designs and the most original color combinabrilliant reds and violets, tions turquoises and chartreuse greens. The colors were made even more pronounced by the use of wool, which absorbed the dye and gave the colors a warm glow. Perhaps these color combinations could only be achieved by the Amish who were deprived of bright color in every other part of their daily lives. Color on Color This heritage can be carried one step further into needlework with exciting possibilities. You can either paint or buy a kit with a printed or piece of material, adding embroidery stitches on top in DMC cotton floss. When you add color on color m this way, all kinds of subtle effects are possible. I recently experimented painting and trees complete with a white picket fence in the foreground You can decorate sweat shirts, quilts, pictures Almost anything that can be stitched can be emiched with painting Versa tex Paint is an acrylic paint that I have found to be very good for painting fabrics. Simply mix it with water to the desired consistency and paint as though working on paper. For a clear separation between colors and to allow you to add colors without waiting for each one to dry, outline each shape with Gutta, a glue like material that will contain each color within its limits and give you a fine separating line. (Gutta comes in all shades and is available 3020 Bridgeway, from Savoir-Faire- , Sausalito, Calif 94965. Versatex paints are available in most art stores in the New York area, Sam Flax, 55 E. 55th St., New York, N Y. 10022 for one, or write to the manufacturers for a retail store near you' Siphon Art, Ignacio, Calif. 94947 ) Stretch Your Fabric Simply stretch your fabric on stretcher strips Outline your chosen design on paper. To make tracing easier, tape your design to a light box and trace the design in "Gutta. Allow to dry and fill in the colors. Alternatively, you can use magic markers that are made by Vogueart. These do not give you a smooth solid area like the one you achieve when painting with water colors, acrylic or oil paints Instead, they will give you a sketchy appearance with a linear look. But you can use this to your advantage, filling the areas with strokes, side by side, almost like stitches, to give a light, lacy look to the design. For instance, you could fill the area inside a leaf with close lines forming veins, then quilt to outline around the edge to enclose it and hold the design together If the pens dry up, moisten tkem with aicuhol to keep them flowing smoothly If you dont trust your drawing ability, buy stencils, which can be found at most art stores m an increasing number of designs. Youll find you feel just like a child m kin dergarten playing with color1 The next step is to use your stitches, or even a little bead sewn here or there, to give your handmade origi nal picture that professional finish outTry quilting around the painted lines with a layer of batting underneath to achieve a raised effect.
