Lutherans in Middle If a horizontal line were drawn to represent historical theological positions, Lutherans would generally occupy the middle, with Roman Catholics, Anglicans and the Orthodox to their right and Reformed, Methodist and Baptist churches to their left. Historically, that has given Lutherans a pivotal role to play in the flurry of church unity developments that began with establishment of the World Council of Churches in 1948 and the ecumenical commitment of the Roman Catholic Church following Vatican Council II in 1965 But it has also caused some tensions as ecumenically minded Lutherans look m different directions. Bishop Edward K. Perry of the mi nU tht nlugum i' a! wiug jf t! n discussions sad that among Lutherans there were those who would first move toward closer cooperation with Roman f athohcs and Episcopalians and others like himself, who want to say ' Let s not deal exclusively with Canterbury and Rome Perry said the agreement between Lutherans and Reformed was deep enough to raise the question why not merge7 Weve got to court each other first," he said There are socio'ogi-ca- l differences differences in ethos in style and in experienced history A Major Step The Lutheran-Roma- n Catholic agreed statement five years in the making, took a major step toward overcoming the key issue that led to Martin Luther's break with Catholithe understanding of how cism sinners are saved It followed a series of other joint Roman Catholic-Luthera- n agreed statements on such issues as the primacy of the papacy and a common understanding of the real presence of Christ in the elements of the Eucharist Holy Communion In the Lutheran-Reforme- d statement, the recommendation that joint communion services be approved acknowledged that differences between the two traditions are not as great as they were in the 16th century An early leader of the Reformed tradition, Huldreich Zwingli, was at odds with Luther over the issue of the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine of the Lords supper Zwingli denied the presence, differing with both Lutherans and Roman Catholics on the issue Even though Reformed churches long ago rejected Zwinglis doctrine, said Rusch, some Lutherans continue to have a lingering concern that m the Reformed tradition the sacrament has been merely a memorial Later, Luther and John Calvin, perhaps the most influential leader of the Reformed tradition, differed on the mode of Christs presence in the sacrament.
