Chaplain Crozier Fitzgerald is the first LDS chaplain to serve Hill Air Force Base. A native of Draper. Chaplain Hill Air Force Base LDS Chaplain Claims Many Firsts in His Career By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Church Editor AIR FORCE BASE -Chaplain Crozier Fitzgerald has had many firsts in his life. He was the first LDS chaplain at the Utah State Prison, the first LDS chaplain to be stationed at Travis Air Force Base, California and Oasan: Korea Air Base and now hes the first LDS chaplain to be stationed at Hill Air Force Base. The first LDS chaplain at Hill, when Salt Lake City is the headqua-ter- s for the five million-membchurch? Yes, Chaplain Fitzgerald said, pointing out the Air Force believes there is enough Mormon bishops near the base to handle the needs of LDS serviceman. But Chaplain Fitzgerald, who first asked for a transfer to Hill in 1973, finally received orders to come to Hill because he is retiring m 12 months and the Air Force generally tries to give servicemen their choice on the last assignment, because most choose the location where they want to retire. Chaplain Fitzgeralds roots are in Utah. He describes himself as a farm boy from Draper who origito nally joined the Air Force escape the farm work, to see the world and to escape the army. Chaplain Fitzgerald explained the Korean conflict was raging at the time. So the young man entered the Air Force reserves. And instead of seeing the world. Chaplain Fitzgerald was stationed at Hill for his first year in the service. He admits that as a young man he didnt have a lot of ambition and didn't consider himself college material. In fact, he admits he had never even given a talk in church until at 21 years of age, he gave his first talk at an LDS branch in Korea, before a congregation made up mostly of Koreans HILL After his Korean assignment, Chaplain Fitzgerald was discharged from the Air Force and he returned to Utah, with the intention of taking advantage of the GI Bill. But he had been back only one day when he was called in by the bishop of the Draper 2nd Ward, who informed him, Youve served your country and have been discharged honorably. Its time for you to serve the Lord now. Chaplain Fitzgerald had second thoughts about serving a mission for the church, but said yes, requesting the church not assign him to a large city. Instead, he told church leaders that he wanted a mission somewhere In Wyoming or "somewhere close North Dakota to home, because Id had enough traveling for a while, he said. But just as he hadnt wanted to be stationed at Hill when he joined the Air Force, Chaplain Fitzgeralds mission assignment was to you guessed it New York City. While in the mission field, he served in not only New York, but Special to The Tribune OREM Members of the Utah Association of the United Church of Christ have voted to join Shared Ministry of Utah, tp be effective at the Shared Ministrys annual meeting in UmN 8tria Claw Oct. Mr. Lappen said it was a problem convincing the chairman of the Department of Religion that he was sincere, but Ive never had an doubts since, he emphasized. He attended Princeton Theological Seminary and received a masters degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif He received a second masters degree from Eastern Baptist College. He has been a member of the same presbytery for 22 years and was serving as standing clerk when he decided to come to Utah. ASSEMBLY Sandy EARLYWORSHIP MORNING Although membership in mainline denominations is shrinking throughout much of the country, churches are still growing in Utah, particularly in the booming suburban areas. LDS Influence Mr. Lappen credits much of the growth to the influence of the LDS Church. He said, So much of life in Utah revolves around the LDS Church that the community hasnt provided the activities it might have otherwise and so it is often left up to the church to provide activities. Another factor in Utah churches growth, Mr. Lappen believes, is most people I've met here are a nuclear family. Grandparents may be 1,000 miles away. Theres no extended family and people are Mr. reaching to other people, Lappen said. In fact, that need to form extended families was part of the decision in naming it Community of Grace. We are forming a community here and that will depend on the grace of God, he said. One of the things Mr. Lappen wants to see emphasized is the formation of a church family. He explained the church will hold family nights for the congregation. The congregation has already held one such night and 114 people attended. What made that evening so unusual, Mr. Lappen said, was that it was the Sunday" night it. rained so hard. We had 14 people on one street who said they would have attended too, but they were sandbagging their homes. An Exciting, Growing Fellowship!! Watcoma y0r Pastor R.J. Schrank 364-287- f So The congregation has only met for four Sundays and Sunday School was started only last week, but already the church has 150 people regularly attending worship services and 119 attended the first Sunday School. Theres an obvious need for a Presbyterian church in the area, Mr. Lappen said. The spirit of excitement shown by the members has been infectious even to Mr. Lappen, who has seen people attend Community of Grace and say, Wow, this is. what weve been looking for. To get better acquainted with the congregation, he has had dinner with each family. Another emphasis of the Com munity of Grace Church will be Christian education for adults as well as youth. Mr. Lappen said education will be one of the major marks of the Community of Grace congregation. He said he believes its important for Christians to be equipped to know their faith. In addition to worship services and Sunday School, Community of Grace Church already has formed both junior high and senior high youth groups as well as a childrens church program for children ages four through seven. The church has a choir and will also soon begin a youth choir. Hails From Delaware Hailing from Smyrna, Del., Mr Lappen was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church there until recently. He has lived all his life within 200 miles of Philadelphia, and so the decision to move to Utah was difficult in many ways. He saw it as a challenge because he felt he would be more obviously Back meeting the need in Utah. East theres a Presbyterian Church on every comer, he said. Besides the need for another Protestant denomination, Mr Lappen likes being in a major city He said hes always lived within a couple of hours drive from three of the eight largest ..cities in the country, but the decision to go to a concert or to a museum was not a spur of the moment decision MTN. The 58th annual General Conference of the United Pentecostal Church International will be held at the Salt Palace Monday through Oct 17 10.UO0 When he returned to Utah following his mission, Chaplain Fitzgerald enrolled at Brigham Young University, where I sailed through college . It only took me seven years to make it through four years of college. But there was a reason for that. To work his way through college, Chaplain Fitzgerald worked as a guard at the Utah State Prison at the attitude of the prisoners made that difficult because they felt, Once a guard, always a guard, and at first they did not accept him as a religious person. He said one day he was praying for help and strength and opened his door to find a Writ of Habeus Corpus on the door. A prisoner was taking him to court over his new position, saying he couldn't shoot the prisoners by night and save them during the day. Chaplain Fitzgerald told the judge at the hearing that as a guard, he would warn any escaping prisoner first, then fire into the air and then aim to wound, not kill the man, although he said he knew he was supposed to be able to kill an escapee, I couldnt have aimed at his heart. His first Sunday behind the pulpit, there were only six inmates at church services. But soon the inmate who had sued him came in to offer his support and soon that inmate was the Sunday School superintendent.
