The 12lli Woild Cup starts in Barcelona Sunday and continues at sites all over Spain until the final, July 11 in Madrid. The paradox is particularly keen for soccer enthusiasts in the United States, because for the first time, all of the games can be seen on home television in the U.S., part of a world audience expected to top the 1.3 billion mark for both the ceremonial opener and the championship game. But while residents in the U.S. may see everything that happens in 52 matches in Spain, Americans remain lukewarm to the North American Soccer League. Everywhere else, the World Cup will be the biggest sporting event of 1982. Because it has expanded to include 24 teams instead of the usual 16, nere are more nations directly involved. And since the game is the most popular sport in the world, this international championship is followed keenly, even in lands whose teams have failed to qualify. The World Cup is arguably the biggest sports production, too, approacliing even the Olympic Games in the number of entrants who take part in the r qualifying session.
