Meet Told of Veteran Organist Plays Music Of Many Religions By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Church Editor Clay Christiansen is the organist at M Marks Episcopal Cathedral Me also plays at the Congregation Kol Ann Synagogue and fills m as organist at arious Protestant and Catholic churches when the need arises. In addition, he works with the Mormon Youth S mphony Choir Music, especially religious music, is Mr Christiansens love and has beer, his love eer since he was a youngster listening to his grandmother play the old upright piano in his childhood home in Emery County. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, Mr. Christiansen began his musical career by imitating his grandmother playing We Thank Thee 0 God For Our Prophet, and said he was elated every time he heard the Mormon Tabernacle organ By the time he was 11, he was organist at his ward's priesthood meetings. He later did his undergraduate work with J.J. Keeler of the Brigham Young University Music Department and then studied under tabernacle organist Alexander Shreiner, as the organists last master's candidate It was a stimulating experience playing with him. Mr. Christiansen said Building Tenure He has been the organist and choirmaster at St. Marks Cathedral for eight years and the Walter Holtcamp organ with its 2,500 pipes is one of the best hes ever played. In the eight years he's been at the cathedral, the organ has become almost like his own and he frequently uses it to teach most of the 60 organ students he has in addition to his church work. The organ is tonally Mr great. Christiansen said, explaining the dry acoustics of the Cathedral lets one "Hear all the intricacies all the while mainOomph and brightness taining the weight of the deeper tones " He said he's played organs clsew here which were supposed to be better, "but there's something about the particular osemg, (of the cathedral organ! that combines the brightness with depth w ithout losing its mcisi eness." He said its an interesting fact that the tabernacle organ, built by G. Donald Skinner, and St. Marks organ should have been built by Americas iwo best organ builders, and that both should be located in Salt Lake City. Variations in Music Working with various faiths, Mr Christiansen said, he finds there are subtle variations in the styles of music, hut much of the ariation is often as not in the arrangement, not in the music itself. For instance, he points out that the famous Mormon hymn Come, Come is Mormon as far as the Ye Saints, ly rics. but he once play ed the same tune for an American Baptist congregation with different words sung Another 4 11 Fortress " Wide Latitude Mr. Christiansen said the cathedral parish gives him a wide latitude in choosing music. I've tried most anything. he said. If pressed to choose his favorite composer. Mr. Christiansen ponders a while and then votes for Bach, although he points out that part of being a musician is being able to "fit into a diversity of styles and make them speak as well as possible " At the synagogue, Mr Christiansen said, he has been exposed "to a rich heritage of Jewish music," and has played music by a variety of contemporary Jewish composers. Although the music he plays at the synagogue is different than the music he plays at St Mark's, lie has occasionally chosen works by Bach to perform at the Congregation Kol Ami. In addition, when he served on the General Music Committee of the LDS Churi h sev eral y ears ago, he presented music from Jewish literature during the annual music workshop at BYl'. He said he's found good music is appreciated by all faiths, although different faiths generally stay with certain sty les of music. The LDS Church in general. Mr Christiansen believes, stays away from music that is too light hearted or "bombastic. He said, WeYe less used to having the organ present its fire, adding Mormon churches prefer music that is relatively softened and sulxlued But not all Christian themes are of a universal nature, Mr Christian said, pointing out that although the congregation at St. Marks loves to hear him play Bach, it is not music that is appreciated by all denominations An active Mormon. Mr. Christiansen serves on the presidency of the Elder's Quorum in his ward and that keeps him busy , since his ward meets from 9am until noon on Sundays St Mark's congregation meets at 10.30 a m. He explains he attends priesthood meeting at his ward, hurries down to St Marks for their services and then returns to his ward for sacrament sen The columbarium will be open to people of all their faiths and the only requirement will be that a service of committal be said for the ashes. Mrs Charles said She said it's unique for Utah to have an interment area connected with a church and she believes that may be something many people will want For furthur information on the columbarium call St Marks Cathedral 1 W1- Carter Conducts Mission v 1'hv public is in lied v '"II r i T rtbune Clay Christiansen has been St. Marks organist for years.
