Show If You Could See What I Hear The Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday, April 3 24, 1982 1 A bumbling movie with good intentions By Janet Maslin New York Times Writer NEW YORK If You Could See What I Hear is an interesting movie to hear about, even if it isnt so very interesting to watch. Its the story of Tom Sullivan, a blind young man whose handicap, if the film is to be believed, is as important a source of practical jokes for him as it is a source of trouble. Twice during the course of the film, we watch Tom drive a car filled with some of his most trusting d budand dies. When the police nab good-nature- him for this, he simply explains that he's blind, and everybody has a good laugh. Laughs like this abound in If You Could See What I Hear." The story of Sullivan, a television the beers handicap, ought to be free. Later, roomas boarding-hous- e mates, Tom and Will alternately bemuse and infuriate the matronly proprietress, who is forever tacking up the "Room for Rent sign and then, charmed by her tenants, taking it down again The film stresses Sullivans skills as a charmer, particularly as a ladies man. He has to do quite a lot of touching with his potential conquests to figure out whether theyre attractive or not, but this is somehow presented as one of his most winning habits. personality who was a consultant on the film, is told in a terribly cute manner and it isnt told from Sullivans point of view, though that would have helped immeasurably. As a college student, he and his crony Will Sly (R H. Thomson) favor such antics as going into a local hangout, ordering beers and then trying to persuade the proprietor that because of Sullivan's HFASHIONPLACE I "SAVANNAH SMILES" 'PG' 1:15, 3:15, 5:15, 7:15, 9:15 'I OUGHT TO girlfriends little sister, Sullivan realizes that the child has fallen into a swimming pool and that he must somehow, without benefit of sight, locate and rescue her. Eric Till, the director, makes this a movie in which nothing truly perilous can possibly happen to anyone Along with Mare Singer, who makes Sullivan a ceaselessly ebullient fellow, this but bumbling movie stars Shari Belafonte A couple of the films sequences would, under other circumstances, be quite suspenseful. When Sullivan decides to go skydiving, for instance, he cant see the ground rushing up at him and doesnt know when to open his parachute; he also fails to see the power lines he nearly drifts into.
